If you're always cold, think down rather than synthetic. What's your budget, and when and where are you planning on camping?

ah.. just seen you're bivvying. In that case synthetic may be better, though heavier and bulkier.

Sell your TAR and buy an exped downmat. Warm sleeping starts with a warm mat. Exped downmats are the best for warmth. For normal use a downmat 7 is thick enough and gives you enough warmth for normal winters.

For sleeping bags start saving money to buy a good sleeping down bag. Since your tarping and bivying you should buy a bag with a very good outer that is waterresitant. when you will camping longer than 2 or 3 days you might well start with using a VBL as well to keep your down in your bag very dry.

A VBL gives also extra warmth

It'll have to be an Alpkit on that budget Kevin, ubless you are really lucky with an Ebay bargain.

you need a foam roll mat under ya thermarest,im guessing your getting cold from the floor first.
try that first cost you about a fiver and will make the world of difference imo.

Diidy has a point, when on budget combining your TAR with a closed cell foam mat works like a charm as well. Depending on the temperature you want to use something from 8mm to 18mm thick as an extra mat. In former times when there was only the standard 3,5R TAR I used a Z-rest as an extra in the 3 seasons and for winter I used a 18mm closed cell foam as extra.

Thanks for good info

What do you think of snugpac bags tho?

Snugpac are a bit optimistic about temp ranges. If you take that into account well nothing wrong (besides weight, DWR)

what you mean zuma?
22/03/2012 at 07:24

zuma means they tend to big up their ratings slightly and because its synthetic its going to be heavy compared too a down bag and not as water resistant as other bags around.

But i like them for what they are for car camping or campsite, not the best for lugging around the hills tho.

Hope that helps!!

Hi Kevin,

I have an Alpkit Alpinedream 900 going. I bought it on this site (see this post http://www.outdoorsmagic.com/forum/forummessages.asp?dt=&UTN=46934&last=1&V=8&SP=

I haven't used it since it was purchased and it's been stored uncompressed. Comes with a stuff sack (not original) and storage bag.

Send me a private message if you're interested.

Thanks.
