Has anybody found a web site selling outdoor gear thats useful ? Have you actualy bought anyting over the web ?

I got pi**ed off while trying to find out what footwear was available in my size (let alone width fitting) on several gear sites. Hence letting off steam a bit here but also wanting to find out waht other folk thought, especially about search facilities and lack of detail in product descriptions on the gear sites.

Ummm.... okay footwear is basically the only thing which you should never buy over the internet. Always try on before you buy. With clothing you should buy try them on, and the same with backpacks too. Stoves etc are ok. They don't require certain fitting sizes, but due to the enormous variety of foot sizes you should always go into the shop to try boots etc on!

I've bought tent, altimeter, headtorch and a few other items including clothing via the web and had no problems at all. But maybe I'm just lucky......

Derek for detailed product descriptions the manufactures' websites are normally quite good.

I bought boots from the web - but they were half-price Salomon Exit Mids and I have some Exit Lows already so I knew the fit would be perfect - and it was. I wouldn't have risked it with a new-to-me style though...

Have also got skis, clothing, tent, concert tickets, DVDs etc - no probs at all. When we spot an incredible bargain, we go for it.

Maybe we also have been lucky?

I really like internet shopping and have had almost only good experiences. I really hate real shopping (although gear shops and food shops I find more tolerable) and this is one of the main reasons why I like internet shopping, I think. I have bought food, clothes, toiletries, tents, books, CDs, Christmas cards and all kinds of stuff. Oh, and I've bought 2 pairs of shoes. One 'cos, like Jeannie, I'd already got some that were similar enough to give me an idea of the size and the other because they only did them down to a size 5 and I've never needed shoes bigger than that. I figured I'd just send them back if they were too big. But they weren't. Hooray.

I have bought a lot of kit on the 'net, and never had any problems apart from a couple of dented SIGGS from CMM, who were kind enough to replace them immediately.

I can also recommend Stewardson's service - stuff is sent out immediately, and Leigh has telephoned me personally, out-of-hours, when something has been unexpectedly out of stock.

I think it does help if you already know what you want. I tend to stick to suppliers I like rather than shop around too much for prices.

Apaert from Field and Trek who have a thread dedicated to their internet ordering here I've had no problems at all with ordering online.

I've been buying quite a bit kit from sierratrading.com, in the U.S..
I've had no trouble at all and saved quite a lot, although my last order has spoilt the fun. For the first time I've been had for Import Duty. For an order of £33 including postage, I had to pay charges totaling £17.61.....Doh!!
Import duty £3.65
VAT £5.96
and worst of all...
ParcelForce clearance fee £8.00
Overall I have saved considerably, but I think I'll quit while I'm ahead on that one.

After a refund from Field and Trek, my custom went to <url=http://www.cmmonline.co.uk> CMM Online</url> who delivered the goods promptly.

Erm, that would be CMM Online, I hope.

And they usually have some amazing deals on, like there was a skiing jacket I think from £220, down to about £80!

I've bought loads of kit on-line apart from Footwear.

I've used the following who have all provided prompt service with parcels delivered within the stipulated timescale:

http://www.cccoutdoors.co.uk for bargains as and when they appear.

http://www.outdoor-equip.co.uk

http://www.magic-mountain.co.uk for discounted Mountain Equipment kit.

http://www.upandunder.co.uk for extensive stock list but as it's only down the road, I drop in to make my purchases.

I pretty much stick to these as the prices are keen and backed-up by prompt delivery times.

I browse Snow & Rock, Cotswold, Field & Trek etc. but the pricing is all RRP. I like a competitive price!

I've bought loads of kit online, as well as other items. I've never really had too much bother apart from a site stating something is in stock, then I get a call telling me it isn't.
I always like to have seen and tried on what I'm going to buy 'in the flesh', then I usually spend a few hours looking around on the net for the best price, just like I would if I was walking around town.

I'm not particularly loyal to one shop but I tend to use the following most often:
George Fisher,
Oswald Baily,
CCCOnline,

I've used Outdoor Megastore and found them quite good. There are certainly cheaper than most even when you take P&P into account. They also ship using Citylink couriers who are soo much quicker than Parcel Farce.
