Filtration and hydration water bottles

Hi, I am new here so there may already be a thread you can point me to? But I am interested if anyone has used either the Lifesaver bottle / or SteriPEN and what the option is on them? Are they easy to use? Would you recommend them?

Not sure about the LifeSaver bottle, having seen one only a couple of times, but it seems pretty heavy and bulky to me and I would probably reject it on those grounds alone for wild camping/backpacking use. The Steripen I have used a lot and find it very easy to purify large amounts of water very quickly. However, it's far from perfect, since it relies on batteries, which can run out, is rather fragile and doesn't remove any foreign material from the water. The last is not usually a problem in the UK mountains, but there are times you might have to rely on muddy or cloudy water.
These days I favour a Drinksafe Systems bottle which is very light and costs less than the Steripen or LifeSaver. Water has to be squeezed through the filter, which is ok with me but some people find difficult.

I second the Traveltap by Drinksafe Systems. Mine is 3 years old and is 0.65 litre capacity. I have found it ok to squeeze water through into a mug or pot but I find it irritating to drink from. It is slow but it makes water safe faster than waiting for tablets to work.

The Drinksafe in line filter works well. I gravity feed two or three litres at night for a meal and breakfast and then filter as I go. I usually carry only a litre.

I was really grateful for my Traveltap this weekend, having run out of tap water in the Lakes (Phew! What a Scorcher!). It's a pain having to squeeze the life out of the bottle to get the water out, but worth it I reckon.

I've been a bit paranoid since last year when I caught a bout of Giardia lamblia either from drinking water from a mountain stream, or dog sitting - never worked out which.

I still take purification tablets though, but save that water for cooking.

I have an MSR Miniworks filter. Like Beaker, i found it highly useful while up the lakes last weekend (High Street and Skiddaw) as it was 20 something degrees up there and water was in high demand. One of my co-walkers had a Traveltap, which seemed to work well, for him. I do prefer being able to refill several bottles at one go, for myself and my co-walkers so we all have enough.

I too am in the market for a filtration system and the MSR was on my hit list but I think the travel tap is a genius bit of kit and I think I'll be getting one of them.
Anyone know of a stockist in Keswick?

I bought a Travel Tap after many recommendation here on OM. Very pleased with it so far although I concede it's not particularly fast.

+1 for the travel tap, i've had the mk1 and mk2 and both have been great, if a bit slow.
