FLYING STOVES

Are fuel bottles allowed on planes?, if so, is there anything you're supposed to do (other than emptying them) before flying?, I'm cosidering buying a multi-fuel stove as opposed to the gas one I use at present.

I've flown with mine, both in hold and hand luggage. Empty is obviously the way but fumes are just as bad as liquid and anything smelling of fuel will get a bad response from airport officials. What I've done sometimes if I anticipate hassle at the airport is to give the bottles a real good clean out and then fill them with a drink with a strong smell and carry them as hand luggage- no problems. drink the drink or dispose of depending how lucky you feel. Dry bottles with toilet paper and you're ready to fill with fuel.

If you fill it with water, then there'll be no fumes. But it might not deal with the smell that may upset the officials.

Best bet would be to check with an airline though.

I've not had a problem, but if you're off on a big trip, it's worth just buying new fuel bottle(s) for the occasion. They're not particularly expensive and it saves any potential hassle.

I've come across quite a few people who've had used but totally empty fuel bottles confiscated because there's a very faint whiff of fuel. In S America I was given some weird American liquid - Dr Wotnot's Miracle Peppermint Elixir or something, that took the smell out pretty effectively.

Strictly speaking you should check the airline's regulations and abide by them, but I've never had a problem with clean bottles and stove in the hold. I suspect that if you did declare them, they'd simply take them off you.

we were asked last time, when they noticed a sigg bottle, was it a fuel or drink bottle?, cheers for the advice

Dave - just think of the fun I'm going to have this year with my *vicious-looking* diving knife when it shows up on the x-ray!! It makes a sigg bottle look like a teddy bear!

I think with the current atmosphere concerning air travel and particularly using American airlines/flying to the USA it'd probably be better to buy a new bottle and have it carried as hand luggage, that way you could open it and show the security staff it's nothing dangerous at all.

Jeannie...Make sure you pack your diving knife in the hold luggage, and make sure you tell the airline staff that you will be carrying it...forwarned is forarmed to make life easier for all!

I carry my Diving Certification Card which usually makes it OK but you never know this year.....

when I go to Sweden I take an axe, folding saw and a couple of significant knives, no problem from x-ray people, I suppose certain things are regular items for certain destinations and raise no eyebrows

For the definitive answer, you need to look at the individual airline's website, as they all have different regulations. US airlines are now pretty strict and apparently they DO enforce their rules. American Airlines won't even let you carry the stove, let alone the fuel bottle.

There I was planning on hijacking an AA plane with my stove. I'll have to think again now, and get a Swiss Army knife from the shop at the gate (after all security) at Geneva Airport instead.

Note for the humour impaired - irony contained within this message.

Chris, irony isn't allowed on US soil and so there's a good chance it may be confiscated at the check in. Sarcasm used to be okay, but is now reckoned to be too sharp, so that's out as well. I'd stick to blunt, literal statements, they should be fine. Make sure you declare them though or they may be mistaken for understatement.

I've heard of peoples nail clippers and nail files being confiscated...!

Jon...whats the stand that American airlines and security staff take on pathos?
23/04/2002 at 19:59
Errrrrrrrrrrrrr not just A Airlines... I was joking with my son while approaching the hand / pocket search / conveyor area about concealed weapons ha ha in an obviously joky way - he's a minor for Chrissakes - and I was told in no uncertain terms by a snotty woman that if that was what I considered humorous then I wouldn't be allowed to fly.
Period.

Pathos is un-American, Leave it at home.

Jeannie. Did you see that Airport programme on TV when the guy was arrested for doing something very similar!

Jon...thanks for the info...I'll remember not to pack it in either my hand OR my hold luggage when next I go to the USA!

Nor in your pocket B4 U ask...
23/04/2002 at 23:10
Don't be daft...it wouldn't fit!
23/04/2002 at 23:13
Sorry R we still talking nail clippers - I'm all confused here...
23/04/2002 at 23:20
Well they are Industrial nail clippers, used in the great clipping factories in Western Khazakistan where hordes of wild marmot are held in captivity until their nails are long enough to be clipped and made into decorations and lucky charms for the over the doors of local Khazakistanis.
