Has anyone seen the freeware UK Map Grabber software ? It allows you to download custom maps from Multimap or Streetmap as big as you like.

I've tried it on a few places and, I have to say, its amazing.

The url is http://www.trailgauge.com

Yes Simon, I discovered the mapgrabber a couple of weeks ago and it really is very good. Is this the end of buying O.S. maps???

Since I found it (see this earlier thread,) I've used it quite a lot, same the resolution’s not better though.

Shame my typing's not either.

I've used it, and boy have i got a big pucture of Kintail!!!

I think that 50km, by 40km, is a bit excessive. It took an hour to download.

I've just used it - it's excellent! What about copyright laws and printing the map out in colour? Does anybody know??

I'm sure it's illegal, but I would guess that the problem is Napter-esque in that it's the software suppliers who are most likely to find themselves in the legal line of fire, but that's just a guess.

I'd be interested to know if anyone has a more informed opinion. It'd make an interesting news story too.

don't know about printing the OS maps via a third party
but you are allowed to print off the areas of OS maps viewable from the OS site as long as they're for your own personal use.
to get a 'full' map from here you would have to print all the bits and join them together, but you'd still get the same data so I don't know getting it all in one big sheet would be illegal

Seems reasonable, the OS really come down on people who breach their copyright for commercial use. As you may know. OS maps apparently have deliberate but harmless errors inserted to make tracking the origins down easier.

Anyway, gotta go and untangle ropes, off to the Alps in 20 minutes. Yahooo!!!!!

Once I got round the problem of my works firewall it is great.

Has anyone purchased a full copy of the trailguage program? Is it worth it?
04/03/2002 at 11:25
Further to my last mail - Is it me or is the 1:25000 maps it claims to download only 1:50000?

Not that it is trailguage's fault, I think multimaps idea of a 1:25000 sacale is a 1:50000 map shown at twice the size! but then again is it just me...........

Sounds good to me! but is it just the standard maps or do they do the laminated maps as well for that price? ( it's the english weather you see)

Graham, it's not you, the maps are 1:50,000. BTW the program does have some stitching errors, so the larger the map you download the more positional errors you will have if the map is loaded into a GPS program.
05/03/2002 at 12:47
So are you saying that to download maps into a GPS, one must buy the £110 CD-ROM? Surely the maps aren't all that bad?

I've been downloading and printing huge maps of Snowdonia, though over a phone line modem I guess it would be rather slow.

Also, 110mb files take a while to print!

Doesn't seem to like downloading anything larger than 40x40km though the boxes do let you put in 50x50km, but it just freezes when I do that.

It's so great for downloading maps of invidual mountains then laminating them. May never buy another map! Found map cases useless for a host of reasons, and now only use laminated maps. But they're pricey and had to find. I have also just managed to rip mine! Grrr!

Have you noticed the laminated maps are folded the opposite way to the normal maps?

I purchased the trailgauge program and find very useful for measuring trail running routes, it does have some nice features.

Anyway I've noticed that the Map Grabber seems to have mysteriously disappeared from the site
- I wonder if the OS or Multimap have taken some sort of action against it ?

Statement from TrailGauge:
"With regret, TrailGauge has had to temporarily withdraw the Map Grabber application for commercial reasons"

However I do have a copy of the self extracting installation file......

Your e-mail reader will need to be able handle attachments. BTW Outlook2002 does not allow you to open attachments with an 'exe' file extension, so let me know if you are using it.
