hi guys, Me and a mate are debating doing the OMM in October, but have never done it before, what kinda gear do people take? light 20l rucksack, with waterproofs, compass, food / gels and water be enough? or should I look to be packing a heavier load?

Cheers,

 James

AFAIK the organisers publish a list of the gear competitors must carry. Have a look at that, and the other rules.

Here's the link: http://www.theomm.com/event-series/omm/omm-rules-and-conditions

It seems you'll need a bit more than you first thought, as you need a tent, stove and sleeping bag as well!

A fair bit of kit on that list, I presume you can share a tent, therefor saving once person some weight! Have you done it before? I am pretty fit and swim, bike, run regularly including a lot of trail and fell running so confident I can do it. Has a location been released for it? I can only seem to find Northern England as a place.

Never done it, but you need to bear in mind that you need to enter but, because they get more entries than places they operate a draw once entry is closed, so you still might not get a place. They also don't announce the location until near the date of the race: they like to keep it a secret!

The area should be announced soon. The actual courses you get 1 minute before you start. Given it's up north this year it is expected to be oversubscribed. You share the tent and cooking kit and food and have your own clothes. That seems to be the norm anyway.

Done the OMM and KIMM, Rock and Run, SLMM, and the new Icelandic OMM

OMM is one of the best organised and most popular around, normally more entries than places

You can save a lot of weight and space by using foods like
Extreme Adventure Food, lowest weight for the highest energy, easy prepare and no bowl needed.

Since you're obviously an avid consumer Dave, please tell us what flavours are available. Male bovine droppings or tinned pork luncheon meat, perhaps?

Can't remember the brand of dehydrated we used last year but it was good. I know pudding was a Golden Syrup sponge cake and a packet of custard which was better!
