I love, I mean I really love the outdoors. but I reckon Id love it a whole load more if I got loads of free gear.

Can you put me in touch with Richard Gear so we can go climbing and walking and stuff with loads of free gear?

hey! how come I've got no name on the last posting? I'm not the invisible bloody man

I say, an outdoorsmagic group ramble would be good fun, I've been using the site for ages but have only just joined, I'd love to meet Richard Gear, if that's his real name, he seems to know everything.

Richard's quite reclusive - I reckon it's partly because he suspects potential friends of 'just being after his gear' rather than his, er, personality.

that's a shame, he seems like a really nice bloke to me and I genuinely would like to meet him, he can't always go walking on his own surely, does he have a "walking partner"?

Stand aside Clarissa, this ain't no place to go falling in love. You've got to keep your eye on teh ball up there in the hills. Richard don't need no belay-bunny, he needs someone who knows their kit on the end of his rope.

knows their kit on the end of his rope?! I think you have the wrong idea

Don't go getting the idea that RG's sad, he always has his red setter Gore-Tex™ for company and several regular partners. I'll suggest the idea of some sort of OUTDOORSmagic walk to him though - our older, sister site BIKEmagic, and don't you hate older sisters - has a Rides section in the forum so people can arrange group rides among themselves. It works really well and, in time, it's something we'd like to bring onto OUTDOORSmagic. Probably a little way down the line at the moment though, we're still a bit of a puppy in web site terms.

I think thats a great idea...I will cerainly be up for it. Beleave it or not "walking parteners" are thin on the ground in my part of N. wales. I still think you could try and blag some gear to try out though!

Okay, I'll have a think and we can take it from there. We're talking about reorgansiing the forum sections anyway, so we could maybe starts a walks and partners area and launch it with an inaugural OUTDOORSmagic bumble in the hills.

I'm not sure about the gear side of things. In the future it would be fantastic to organise test days with manufacturers supplying some test gear, but we could certainly bring along some swish jackets and rucksacks for a try out.

Do you have any thoughts on when and where?

Wales sounds a lovely idea, do you think we can tempt Mr Gear out of his shy shell then? I'd really like to meet the man with that wacky sense of humour, (he doesn't read the forum does he?)

He has actually been known to post occasionally, though not for a while. If we organise an OUTDOORSmagic walk in Wales, I'm sure he'll come along complete with dog.

Going back to the first question, the answer is yes, but... and the 'but' is that some of it has to go back. Some of it gets so trashed the manufacturers don't want it back, Richard Gear burns some of it to stay warm in winter. The bottom line, is that review gear's supplied by the manufacturers for test and review on the site.

Or you could try working in a gear shop. Money's nothing special but you get lots of toys to test.
Of course the down side is the customers........*

Wales sounds like a good idea but Where as it is quite a big country you Know!!

Jon, given your complaint that you are falling behind in your gear testing, (FMD restrictions etc.) does this make the chance of member testing more likely? I'd happily wear a jacket or sack, or anything else for that matter, for a couple of days to help you out...
