Lots of postings on the site singing the praises of product X and Y. Very useful stuff, however, just as important is knowing what cr*p there is out there.

What are your worst buys and why?

Goretex / sympatex , or any other membrane in a boot, they don't last long, you get verrrrrry sweaty tootsies, and you could have spent your extra dosh on a pair of seal skins for exteme wet weather.

Berghaus Leather Storm 2000. Usless sole unit which they are still using. Berghaus weren't interested when I put it to them. I use Scarpa now and the built quality is far better. I won't use Berghaus footwear any more...

Asolo approach shoes, no grip in the damp or wet. None. Nyet. Nada. Butkis. Zilch. Zero. Sod-all.

Now I wouldn't consider buying Asolo footwear. Even though I've been told by other people that the Asolo stuff they've tried is very god.

Salomon Exit Low approach shoes. Great sole, v comfortable etc but the leather keeps detaching itself from the rubber at the front. I'm on my 4th pair now, and although Salomon are very good about replacing them, it's annoyting having to take them back to the shop all the time, send them back, get new ones etc. Plus the shop staff are starting to take the piss now!! Has anyone else had a problem with these shoes?

Oh.... how do I hate thee, let me count the products...

1. Koflach second-hand plastics - an appalling fit and productive of total misery, horrid.

2. Any number of early, windproof fleeces which engendered instant sauna conditions in minutes.

3. Porelle Dries - I never got on with them, they just seem to make my feet feel cold and what is that bag-like cut about?

4. Trangia stoves - Ray Mears could boil water faster with a handfull of moss and a piece of metal.

5. Adidas Tangent Mid lightweight shoe things - not only did the uppers wage war on my feet, but the wet grip of the sole was non-existent.

6. Oh there are so many more, do you really want to know them all?

7. Wet Tracksters on mountain bikes. Go figure.

8. The re-modelled Karrimor Alpiniste fleece for ruining a really good technical jacket.

9. Lots of other things

The hoods on Sprayway Jackets. The hood on my Torridon is HUGE, has no volume adjustment and the velcro fastening is useless in snowy conditions.

PS I don't think anyone should be allowed to defend anything in this thread. It would spoil the fluidity.

I would have to agree with Jon on the windproof fleece thing. Except...they are great for the winter walk to the shop, pub etc.

I thought shoes would create the most fuss.

I have a pair of Meindl Burma's (I think). Anyway, the goretex ones. I don't overheat. Feet are the hardest to please (no rude comments).

Salomon Exit Low, the original version, for stinking so badly they had to be banished to the garage.

I never get to wear my Exit Lows for long enough for them to smell!!!!

How about some Tog-24 power-dry boxer shorts with the crotch panel sewn in wrongside up! On a mountain bike in the middle of summer. Arrrrgh the pain. No grown man should have to suffer nappy-rash. That kind of attention to detail could give someone hypothermia, I got away with a sore arse.

To be hones I wore them for about a week with no socks... My own fault really I guess.

Windstopper hats and gloves that double in weight when wet… that will be most the time then here in the UK!

Garmont boots, sposed to be anatomically (?)designed for feet but didnt stop the stombloc liner ripping. Spent a whole walk with squelching feet and bubbles escaping through the laces, a walking advert for fairy liquid.

Oh.... and a cheap silk liner that tied me up in knots and made my hair stand on end, literaly.

I like Brasher walking poles they are well made, well spec'd & well priced, the only draw back SPARE PARTS! if you need a section, grip ,forget it. unless brasher have had a return or a faulty pole that they can split, you can forget it.

In reference to the gaiters thread.

REGATTA gaiters. Pure Shite!

(But I didn't buy them they were a leaving present from a previous work place.)

A superdrug first aid kit. Over specifed, over priced and over heavy.

Mrs F would happily vote for her Salomon Exit Lows. They crucify her feet and well, she hates them.

My hates:

1. Regatta. And I mean ANYTHING by Regatta!

2. Berghaus Vertigo Lo 3 Approach Trainers - Nice footwear but tend to 'Stretch', hence feeling a little too big.
