When did the SL3 outer/Nest/Pole/Pegs start being sold as a complete "tent"? I'd noticed it first on ULOG but I've just taken delivery of one that's come from the US and it's packaged in one big stuff-sac.

Also, the tag has an RRP of $400 which seems to equate to £300+ over here. WTF? I sold a nearly-new SL3+Nest on here a couple of years back for about £160 which was £20-30 less than I paid for it. It's almost as if Golite don't actually want folk too buy these things

They must have been on the peyote cactus or summat...
I've been after one of these for ages, but not at that price!.

After buying a second hand SL3 and nest last week I've just got my first opportunity to put it up in the garden ahead of next weeks camp, and I like it (so does her indoors).

The head space is perfect, the floor space is excellent and at first glance it seems fairly stable. It's the older model with 2 vents and a 1 way zip but that doesn't bother me too much.

I bought this purely for car camping trips, better weather wildcamping and we're hoping to do the Cumbria way next year so this would come in very handy. Got a Hilleberg Nallo 2 for wilder weather.

I think at some point I'll be hoping to get some walking poles and trying to errect the nest with those, I also wouldn't mind a full or 3/4 solid inner at some point. I've read the first 10 pages of this thread and will read the rest another day but for now, I'm just looking forward to getting it up in the hills

Eureka WickiUp 3 SUL

ULOG will start stocking these in Jan 2013. Opinion seems to be as good as the SL3, better build quality and solid fabric inner instead of all mesh..

11/12/2012 at 18:18

Sure looks like an SL3 as ULOG say; and seemingly available only in a modest green. Inner looks nice too - wonder if they will sell as modular?

Looks identical but with an improved inner and a slight weight and price increase, there's inflation for you.

How's the build quality reckoned to be better?

ULOG Newsletter:-

"Eureka are a big brand in Europe that have turned their attention to high quality 'light' and 'ultra-light' weight tent construction and we're impressed by the quality, so much so we've decided to carry their range next year.

In a few short weeks we'll have stock of the Wiki-Up SUL3 and Wiki-Up SUL4 - these are (frankly) virtually identical to the GoLite Shangri-La 3 and 5, which made us hesitate.   Its been a difficult decision to stock these tents as the design is clearly GoLite's, however two factors tipped the balance in Eureka's favour - firstly I don't feel confident we'll ever get the GoLite shelters ever again and secondly I think the Eureka products are better. Well I would say that wouldn't I? But the facts are that the addition of solid fabric on the inners (rather than 100% mesh of the GoLite version) is a step forward for our climate, and secondly, having used both versions of the Wiki-Up SUL3 the quality of manufacture of the Eureka version seems better.   Weights and prices are similar for both and so we hope you approve of our decision!"

No specifics but i'm sure Mark would give his reasons if you mailed him.

Thanks for that.  It's interesting that they don't appear on the main US website, but then that's probably because like he says it's Golites tent, just filling a niche now they've stopped selling here.  The quality bit I think is just sales hyperbole.  That is a better inner though.

An inner that turns the shelter into an inner first pitch design with no porch, unfortunately. And the price is mental money for what is essentially a simple tarp shelter. I know it's not comparing like with like, but you can get full-on mountain tents for that. Missed a trick not offering a fly-only deal, pity.

True.  Pitching inner frst aside if the floor was cut short from the corners back from the door you'd still have space for 2 and room to cook and stow wet stuff.  I've got the golite inner and don't peg the door part out with 2 inside and just pull it back, it'd be better if it was smaller though in the first place.

It is possible to pitch outer first but is a faff.  It's pretty easy to stow the inner and pack up with the outer still up though.  With the outer pegged, reduce the pole, hold the apex up from the inside with your hand get it off the inner and put the pole back up.  It's easier than it sounds, honest.  Also depends on how the floor is pegged out/connected to the outer.

As said you can still pitch outer first (if it is the same as the Hex) and then put up the inner - PITA but doable. Inner-first has never been the issue others appear to see it as for me.

What ULOG haven't told you is that the guy who used to work for Golite in the UK until that closed is now working for the company which is now wholesaling these new Eureka 'copies' and strangely the same company is also offering a Golite Ion copy and a Golite Jam copy allbeit with a few alterations, like a top pocket on the Jam (copy).

Small world eh?   I've sold Eureka in the past and they service the mid price range and quality market really well, however some of their products in the range make you wonder about lack of though in the design.

I saw these copies in Germany this summer at the industry show, and the SL3 appeared identical at a casual viewing. I'm sure they will sell well.

As it happens I'm having a final clearout of my SL3 accessories and I have a groundsheet and an inner nest cerica 2010 up for grabs. £20 and £30 plus £6 shipping respectively. Any takers PM me here please.

We are also selling off the last few Golite packs off the site at £25 each, if anyone wants a stocking filler?

Bob, YGM re the inner

I've recently been convinced to give the Shangri La style shelter a go this winter, but I'm realising that I've come a bit late to the party in terms of actually getting my hands on one! Any advice as to where I might be able to pick up an SL3 - ideally just the tarp and pole.

I'd like to get a modified inner made to allow some internal cooking space -  am I right in thinking there's a company here in the UK that do this?

Oookworks do inners.

SL3s often come up secondhand; if you get one and still need a pole I've got one - I use trekking poles which makes the original pole redundant.

Great shelter for winter - especially with a half-inner.

12/12/2012 at 14:25

The Inner has now gone, but the floor only is still available at £20 + £6 shipping.

12/12/2012 at 16:54

Thanks for that - Ookworks page now saved for future reference... now all I need to do is find someone who's getting rid of an SL3, preferably in yellow

have you seen this:

Might be of interest?

Great shelters, but yellow SL3s can be insect-magnets. Less of a problem in the winter though I guess
