Just one luxury (i.e non essential so it can be functional) item with you  on a multi day walk what would it be?

My Jack Russell (not strictly functional but good company and doesn't criticise my navigation)

A dog dazer.

Well, either the little dog or Christine Lagarde

en-suite bathroom with complimentory toiletries and fluffy towels.

or a decent pillow.

I'd take the hot bloke I'm always looking for to keep me warm at night.

Though it's so hot at the moment, that a cool dude might be more welcome

Fluffy towels! Yes!

Kate! Behave!

I'd take a camera (and sell the shots I got of Skip and Christine Lagarde - I've heard Saga Magazine pays well for that sort of stuff )

But if a camera already counts as essential (I think it does for me) then I'd take some mini binoculars.

A sherpa an attractive female one( just to balance Kate's request for a bloke) Then they could carry the bathroom, guitar and warm my sleeping bag.

Skip,

I hope it's a dog and not a bitch - cos if it's a bitch it will criticise everything

As a genuine response to the OP, the first time I walked the TMB, I took an SLR camera with big zoom lens, a CD player, a dozen CDs, a big book and a stovetop espresso. I like my comforts and, walking solo, wanted to be comfortable if I had to wait out a storm in my wee tent. My pack wasn't particularly light. The second time, and on other multi-days, I have usually been with my wife and a couple of friends, and company means I'm less inclined to read or listen to music.

Of course, these days, the book and CD player could be replaced with a phone, which could also be a GPS and camera and it is even possible to get passable instant coffee. So the two things I would take now would be a phone and charger.
