Karrimor Orkney III Weathertite Boots

Are they OK or cheap n' nasty?

Are those Karrimor Orkney III Weathertite Boots which Field & Trek are currently selling cheap for £30 any good? I don't rate Karrimor, Millets sell all that rubbish, and I'd also prefer a pair with the rubber bit (or similar) at the front that protects the toes because they get scuffed and bashed against rocks etc.

Am I better off spending a bit more for a pair of 'Keen' mid boots? There's at least 2 pairs of Keens I've seen which look like what I'm looking for i.e. the Siskiyou Mid WP's. I've also been considering Trail shoes, but they hardly seem ideal for trudging through boggy stuff, crossing rivers etc even though my ankle gaitors would fit around them OK.

I have a pair of the previous version of these boots the main difference is the latest version has a leather rather than a fabric tongue.  At £30 they are good value for money.  The leather upper is adequate with a minimum amount of stitching and the weathertite lining means they are waterproof if not as breathable as boots with a Goretex or event lining.  The insole while adequate does not offer such in the way of support but this is true of many boots including the more expensive models.  The vibram sole has a reasonable deep tread and offers good grip. Some people have had issues with the sole separating from the upper but I had had no such issues.  I would not class the Keen boots as being comparable as the Karrimor ones are a full height rather than a mid cut design.

The Karrimor boot is normally available in branches of Sportsworld but at a higher price than on the website.  You could however try a pair on in a branch and see what you think.  The KSB last that Karrimor use is quite "high volume" so you may find that a half a size smaller than your normal boot size will give the best fit.
