Should I go for Goretex lined boots or not? I'll be wearing them mainly in the UK and Alps to do winter walking/easy ice routes and some scrambling.

I think the Makalus are gonnabe pretty waterproof with or without the goretex, as long as you look after them properly.

Personally speaking, I dont see the point of gore tex lining in a leather boot, but I don't go ice climbing (yet!) so someonel else may be in a better position to answer your query with regards suitability for that.

I use the GTX version and they really are the dogs for wet weather/winter walking. when walking in heavy rain i find the outer does start to wet out abit so i would imagin that after long periods of use in snow, the water would eventualy go through

Plus if u go for the gtx, if u get wet feet, u can send em back n complain....

Thanks Simon and Ben. I've gone for the GTX ones (had to order them this morning or miss out on a deal). I'll see what they're like this winter and post a review in a few months.

Cheers,
Ros.

Ahhhhhh but how long do La sportiva guarantee the goretex liner? I tend to find that non gortex / sympatex boots are more versatile ,use seal skins in the cold and wet,and use regular socks in the dry, happy feet!

Well I have Gore-Tex liners in a pair of suede/fabric booties that I have *thrashed* for four seasons for four years and my feet are still bone-dry in them even when wading through streams, so it is dangerous to over-generalise.

And with merino wool socks I don't get a perspiration problem in them either, before the membrane-haters start on that tack. Just remember to rinse out the inside occasionally to remove any grit - though that advice also preserves non-gore linings, too.

p.s. Welcome, Ros!
