Looking for advice

I am in the market for a new pair of winter boots that will mainly be for Scottish winter walking with a bit of summer alpine use thrown in as well as maybe the very odd easy Scottish winter climb. Does any one have experience of these boots? I have tried them on and they seem to fit well - I am just looking for feedback on their capability/suitability.

Thanks

good lite boot, excellent on rock and general summer alpine, not big snowy peaks, more rocky lower ones
negatives, tread depth, its a bit slippy on wet ground and mud, also wouldnt recommend it to people who get cold feet easily

if you want a boot more for walking than scrambling/climbing but want the modern lightweight option, then have a look at scarpa mirage or raichle all degree lite as they have deeper treads more suitable for UK useage (as always if they fit) but you will see what i mean about tread, sometimes though actually accellerating through muddy slopes is beneficial!

Thanks gearboy. Think these are the boots for me especially as thet seem to fit well. Just bought a pair of the UKC forum for 110 quid which is a bit of a result.

I got a pair for £45 from UKC! Only worn a couple of times by the looks of them. How lucky am I?

Three sizes too small mind... ;-)

These have only been worn a couple of times too - as new the seller said. Maybe I didn't haggle enough....

LOL Steve B!

I'll buy them off you for £50...

....I wonder if they'll fit?
;-)

Slightly seriously, I've also been wondering about a pair of these to cover British winter use but also to be able to get more use out of them either scrambling or on trips to places like the Dolomites. Gearboy, when you say "not big snowy peaks" what are ruling out - major Alpine summits and Himalayan peaks? How do you think they'd get on in say the Cairngorms in winter (after we've had some snow!)?

hi matt
personally i suffer a bit from cold feet so bearing that in mind i would use them for sub 4000 alpine mountains where rock will scrambled aswell as snow ice,( i.e cosmiques arete, dent de geant(no rock shoes needed)or on VF scrambles in dolomites etc, if its a pure snow ice route then i would tend to use mt B3 boots(aig d'argentiere, tacul, etc)
for me same thing in the gorms in winter i tend to use my B3 boots, as weather can be more inhospitable, but if it was shaping up to be a nice day and the plan was walk in the corries easy gully up and out for a nice walk across the tops in sunshine, i would use them, but generally i play safe and use my B3's,
my light boots are sized for a thinner sock though too, so that dictates, as i use it as a technical scrambling type boot, if i was to get something modern for scottish gully and mtn walking, i.e. a lighter scarpa manta then i would look at scarpa mirage type product for better tread and warmth over trango s
if i had shares in vibram i would have about 5 different mtn boots, but i have 2 and use accordingly

Thankd gearboy, that clarifies it a lot. I think for the use I want and sock combination I'd use etc. the Evo S would probably be ok, but the Mirage or the Scarpa Charmoz are probably worth a look too - in the end it'll be which one fits my feet.

as a note charmoz has basically same sole as trango, thats why i said mirage for more uk use, i reckon it might be a bit warmer too

fits your feet is always the best boot!
