Ladies Buffalo options

Looking for a winter coat for general use for the wife who always gets cold. Is the ladies mountain shirt the best option for warmth with a ladies cut?

If appearance is even slightly important to you and your wife then a jacket with Primaloft or other synthetic insulation might be better for general use -- unless you go for the rugged utilitarian look. Buffalo is good in many ways, but I reckon it's too heavy and bulky for just knocking around, and doesn't really layer well unless you get a size bigger than you really need.

I wear a Buffalo mountain shirt and do not 'run hot'.
I use it for most Scottish weather except the warmest, or the very coldest (-I use a tecmax Buffalo at serious minus temps.) It is my 'go to' top layer for general walking. It can be too warm on ascents, but deals with wind and damp superbly, especially on the tops. I wear a lightweight merino base layer underneath -as taking it off and going 'bare topped' isn't usual dress code for female walkers. Buffalo shirts do nothing to enhance your 'female curves' but it is the ultimate in utilitarian usefulness. I find the pockets are the best placed of any jacket I have used.
I first bought one on impulse and it is now my most used piece of outdoors clothing.

If it really is just general use rather than walking, the Ladies alpine jacket is very similar overall but a full length zip and different pocket arrangement. Not as functional as the shirt design - little is - but suppose it might suit general use better.

(Well the fixed hood is a little less warm, but it does at least come with one as standard. Their website lists the options.).

is the ladies alpine as warm as the mountain shirt and a 'female fit'?

Look at the ladies Monatne extreme jacket, rather more attractive than the buffalo and a zip makes it more useful for errr general use.

I was going to suggest the Montane W's Extreme, as I seem to remember that it's more attractively tailored.

I love my Buffalo shirt but only use it in winter as I get too hot in it. In sub zero conditions its great, no base layer needed.
The Montane is similar and has a much better hood.

The main part of the alpine jacket is I'm pretty sure identical to the mountain shirt in terms of materials. The hood has a less warm lining.

I'd hope that the ladies version has a female fit, but goodness knows what the fit is actually like! Castleberg in Settle have actually had some in so might be able to advise about that.

(Actually just one left in L on sale - here, along with the odd other potential option.).
