Last Ditch Tent Search

Hi all,

Before I risk (finanical ruin/going insane/drive my wife crazy) delete as appropriate, I am looking for a tent that meets the following criteria:

- 1 man

- Decent porch (ala dimensions of my ME Dragonfly 2 XT porch)

- Fly first, or pitch as one (I live in the UK!)

- Double skin (as above)

- 3 season use (don't camp in winter much, but have been out in the snow now and again)

- Less than 2.5kgs in weight (current one is that, and that's a two msn)

Am I asking for too much? Is there something out there that meets all of these? Or shall I just go crazy and make my own?

Wild Country Zephyros 1 on sale at Go Outdoors for £91.80.  1.57kg and meets rest of your criteria.

If a massive porch a la Dragonfly 2xt is what you're looking for I'm not aware of any out the box 1 man tents that can deliver.  You could, however, get an MSR Hubba HP and the gear shed extension which would come in at around 2kg and give you big porch but it doesn't pitch inner first unless you get a footprint and then it's a bit of a faf compared to something like an Akto.

Tarptent Scarp 1

Though if you have to buy new might be expensive, can only buy from US, so have to pay excise duty.

Never used one, or seen one but Robens' Trailstar might suit, £80 if you find right place selling.

I don't know of any 1 man tent that could match those proportions as 1 man tents just aren't made that way for obvious reasons.

The Zephyros and the Scarp would seem claustrophibic in comparison. !

Guess you'd need to take out a second mortgage and go for something like the Hilleberg onion (Anjan) @1.9kg, though it would be just a tad overkill imo.

Only other alternative in my head is to go with something like a laser comp and pitch a tarp over the entrance for extra storage space, guess you could do that for around 1.5kg-ish + the trekking poles you'd need to guy it out.

Why the need for such a large porch btw. ?

I'd think it would be to store a bike in. Si?

Therefore as Twig says, you'd need to pitch a tarp, or something like over porch of a one man tent.

You are not going to get a 1 man tent with a huge porch, even the cheap ones. they just aren't made that way. Nor do any that I know of have porch extensions as an extra.

That was my guess too Paul, and i was going to point him in Nigels direction for advice, but then again maybe like you he has a pack of Huskies accompany him. ?

Thinking further maybe something like the Shangri-la 3 would do, or a Trailstar if you need a huge porch, but more info needed on what your going to use it for is needed really Si if we're to really help.

Thanks for all the advice.

Have previosly had 1 man tents (macpac microlight and vango micro tbs 100).

Wanted a decent porcht to be able to get the tent up, get in out of the weather, get out of wet gear, then get into the inner.

Unless anyone has any better ideas for doing this, that's why.

As I said in the other post, am quite interested in the tipi. How does everyone find getting around the centre pole? Do you have to curl around it when sleeping, or could someone at 6ft 1 be at 'full stretch' inside?

Just incase your not aware but the porch size can be incresed with a outer pitch tent by unclipping the front of the inner or by removing it alltogether So there are many many options but for the price it's hard to go wrong with a Wildcountry Zephyros 1.

I can manage this reasonably well in a small tent even with a small porch.. You don't need to totally get in out of the weather unless horrendous - after all you are wearing waterproofs?

A walk through: Sit down backwards in porch with legs sticking out. Take off jacket, shuffle back into inner at same time as lowering overtrousers to knees.  Partially Zip down flydoor, sort out top half, sort out lower legs/boots in porch.  Sorted.  I've managed backpacking in rain since childhood like this.

If really really bad, just get in and strip off, mop up with whatever you mop up with!

Well, 2 of the guys giving SL3 advice in other thread are both taller than you....

what more do you want? Can easily get 2 sleeping in one, (I have had 3 in a full nest with pole offset from vertical)  masses info here: Golite Shangri La 3/Hex 3 Owners thread

Thanks for all the advice.

Definitely narrowed it down to Tarptent Scarp 1, Wild Country Zephyros 1, or a GoLite Shangri-la 3 with a ripstop (not mesh) 3/4 inner.

Talking to someone already about a scarp.

Anyone else have any they want to part with, or swap for an ME Dragonfly 2XT?
