Light headtorches

Best for summer/emergency?

With the days drwaing out I was assembling a few bits of my spring/summer kit but couldn't find my Petzl e+ lite torch, so was wondering whether to replace it like for like or go for a cheaper option. The two possibles I've seen are the BD Ion and Silva Siju, which are about half the price. They don't offer as many features, but I never used most of those on the e+ lite so don't really mind that. But are they as good at actually casting enough light to get you off the hill? Just wondering if anybody has any views on these torches, or any other sub-50g ones they would suggest. Cheers all.

I bought my Daughter a DB Ion and i've been really impressed with it.  It's bright enough to follow a path with.  I've not used a e lite but I can't imagine it being brighter than the BD.

As an alternative how about an old school torch?  LED Lenser P3 40g inc battery (AAA) and much brighter than little head torches cost about a tenner.

I've used a bd ion for a few years now - pretty good, reliable, light and practical but the batteries are expensive and not the easiest to come by.

On my wishlist to replace my ageing bd xenix is the zebralight H31. A big step up in price but I reckon it should be a good year-round option for me and I use CR123A batteries in a fenix torch so usually have them around.

I've got an old zebralight - had it for about three years, takes a single AA battery and that is about the weight of it - it can be very bright if you need it or very dim for in the tent, I leave it in the pack as my spare - has come in handy sometimes.

Very bright as I said, but flood only, which is great for the immediate area around you but if you need a spot to look further ahead you need another torch and I carry a little lenser for distance.

I use the photon freedom. Only about £10, weighs nothing and provides plenty of light in the tent at night. I've never had to use it to get off the hill but plenty of other people on other threads say it's good enough.

Link to strange green nigh vision version. I have ordinary white led.

I got the Silva Siju in the end, mostly because it was cheapest. Casts about as good a light as the e+ lite, battery life seems good and it's stood up to a couple of heavy rain showers with no problems. Excellent value at the £8 or so I paid for it.
