What was that Jon said about weighing your rucksack...?
02/05/2002 at 21:45
Well we who have already met Bob know that he's pleasantly nuts.....

...all this talk about throwing saucissons off ledges...and using fleeces he bought in 1979 and wondering why it's going a bit lumpy...

He's a treasure.

hmm here's a little something

WHY EVERY TRAVELLER SHOULD HAVE THEM

THESE all-purpose boots will take you anywhere that doesn't require ropes and crampons. They are so light (only 880gm for my size 6 pair)you could almost dance in them. This makes a difference - research at Sheffield Hallam University demonstrates that carrying an extra 500gm on your feet is equivalent to carrying between 2-2.5kg in your rucksack.

Is that research at Sheffield for real? it's a pretty interesting result if so.

[reply to Martin] I seem to recall it from an advert - can't remember which - so I suppose it must be. I have not contacted Hallam Uni direct - they may want money for the research report!

Like I said, 9.54 kg + 2kg for food and water, and yes, carting the climbing gear around for three days and we missed the bloody turn off for Pillar Rock! With Jeannie's half of the tent as well I was back up to 20kg! I just can't win!
Mind you, my new Marmot Driclime windshirt (which I can't wear yet because it's a birthday present) will replace my fleece and knock a couple of hundred grams off.

..it's hidden in the house somewhere...
13/05/2002 at 23:45
Bob...that way madness lies...
13/05/2002 at 23:50
Well, I don't know about madness, but it's pretty maddening when you miss a blinking obvious turn off to pillar rock! Actually, it was only obvious in descent, but I know where to go next time, but by then, i will be considerably lighter....
13/05/2002 at 23:52
...if you find it...
14/05/2002 at 00:16
I will find it next time because now I know where it is.
14/05/2002 at 00:17
Post no.32! Got it.
14/05/2002 at 00:19
..I'm talking about his Marmot...he's talking about Pillar Rock....

..and they say that the art of conversation is dead....

Thank goodness for home networks...

Is the medium of the internet the only way you two talk to your spouse...?
14/05/2002 at 18:46

how do you set up one of these home networks then >:-|
14/05/2002 at 20:09
Alex, I built two computers and have networked them with a simple crossover cable. Don't need a hub on only two machines. One accesses the net on an ordinary 56k connection (free courtesy of NTL) and the other one shares it with no noticeable delays. I kept windows 98 on both since home networking is straightforward with this.

By the way, on old threads noticed you bought some Merrel reflex shoes. How are they? I've been looking at lighter weight footwear options - still got sore ankles from last weeks mega backpack though - and may post a thread on what shoes people use these days. Like the sound of the 5 tens, but don't know much about wear and stuff.

I weighed my rucksack last night. 15kg including whiskey. I'm sure I've forgotten something.
15/05/2002 at 10:38
Soda to go with the whiskey??
15/05/2002 at 10:46
No. Pure Lakeland water I think.

Ahh even better Mike!
