Being as I am into lightweight (Hilleberge Akto tent & Golite rucksack etc), I think my camera needs changing. Any ideas on a half decent electronic zoom without the weight?

Do you mean 25mm? Arguably the best small compact is Ricoh's GR1, not cheap but consistently well reviewed. Not a zoom though. The R1 is good too, I use one as a climbing camera.

For SLRs, Minolta make one which is claimed to be the world's lightest. I've forgotten the name/number, but sold by the likes of Jessops, www.jessop.com I think.

You have to trade weight for picture quality and the ability to take photos in low light levels. Do you really need a zoom lens? Good quality optics are a lot lighter with a fixed focal length.
