It must be about two years ago since event first popped up, then promptly disappeared again. I always wondered what had happened to it - turns out Lowe have bought it! When it appeared, the developers said it would kick Gore-Tex's sorry ass...

If it's half as good as the Lowe guys say it is, it should be very, very good indeed. More details on the front end of the site soon.

Let's cut to the chase...how much?

Event? Sorry what?

Too rich 4 your blood, Alex!

The slush fund is coming along nicely thanks very much...

I still can't remember if it appeared here on in New Scientist. Or somewhere else entirely. I thought it was a bit hair-brained - 'we're a million times better than Gore' etc - and when it disappeared I thought it had sunk. (Their website has gone.)

But no, Lowe had snapped it up! Top marks for something new to take on XCR. Even if it is an admission of sorts that TPC can't match XCR.

It was actually on here, also the web site hasn't gone, it's:

www.eventfabrics.com

They started off by producing their own PTFE industrial filters and have branched out from there apparently.

Oh, and Lowe haven't bought them or owt like that, they're just using the fabric in the same way that other companies use Gore. Not sure if they have an exclusivity deal in the outdoor clothing market, it's already been used in other markets.

You know, I think I came across that address when I was searching for it but it didn't work (I actually did search for Event fabrics). That website doesn't seem to show up in search engines (I guess it gets lost amongst all the other sites with 'event' and 'fabric' - not many of them, noooo)

Ok. Lemme get this straight. eVENT is a PTFE membrane which is fully waterproof, and more breathable than XCR? What about PacLite 3? What about te weight of the stuff, and the cost is gonna be phenomenal! Right?!
30/09/2002 at 11:40
I remember trying to do the win a jacket thing, and failing miserably (Netscape couldn't read the forms). I haven't used Netscape for two years, so that places eVENT for being around for a while now.

I wondered if LA have exclusivity or not tpp. If not, could this stuff take over from Gore from being known as 'the best'?

And Finally will LA be using Dry Yarn on this stuff? Dry Yarn has been amazing on my jacket.

'I think I came across that address when I was searching for it' and 'That website doesn't seem to show up in search engines'

Contradicted myself nicely there

Yes, no, probably.

Yes it'sa PTFE membrane. I don't know how expensive it is per se, but the Lowe stuff will be pricy because they've opted to use it for their top-end technical jackets while the rest of the range will continue to use TP and TPC. In other words, they're trying to position it as a premium product.

Not sure how it compares with Paclite 3 on breathability though I guess that both Gore and eVENT have some sort of idea on that score.Hopefully we'll get an eVENT test garment next month and will have a better idea of how they stack up.

Will it 'take over' from Gore? Well, Gore-Tex has a huge reputation developed over a long period. If eVENT is as good as claimed, it'll build up a following for sure, whether it will ever rival Gore is harder to say. It's an awful big windmill if you get my jist.

Er, so will eVENT use Dry Yarn?

PS I didn't say 'take over from GT', I meant take over in terms of reputation.

I reckon that it'll only start challenging Gore if Event invests the same huge amount in advertising and promotion that GT do.

Gore ave a huge headstart on Event, so it'll take a while, regardless of how much they spend.

Whats Dry Yarn then?

;-)

Good point well made. Or was that a serious question?!

Shockingly it was a serious question!

Although I can see why the fact it had my name at the top of the post would lead you to automatically discount that possibility!!

So, whats dry yarn then?

ahhh! I thought it was 'LA have no marketing budget therefore I don't know what Dry Yarn is' type point.

DY is some Japanese treatment apparently developed there for golfing jackets. What it actually is though is an effectively permanent water repellent finish.

While it can be masked by dirt like other DWRs it doesn't wear off and so the jacket only needs a wash - or even a quick rinse in my experience - to get the DWR working again (by removing the dirt). Tumble dry it too and the effect is amazing. Unlike any other jacket the DWR never needs reapplying. (Lowe says 'near permanent' and that the coating lasts for thrity washes - but as I only wash mine once or twice a year, you go figure!)

It's an incredibly good DWR too. My jacket has never wetted out (eight hours of constant rain? The joys of leading groups in Snowdonia).

That, the amazingly good hood design LA use, and the 100% reliabilty record TPC has is why I wear an Alpine Flash and will do for many years yet.
