I know Malt Loaf isn't technically walking "gear" but it's slow release carb loveliness has given me fuel for plenty of hikes/climbs in the past! When I've been the walk leader, I've even graded walks using the 1,2 or (eek!) 3 loaf rule! Does anyone else on the forum swear by this miracle of nutrition or am I on my own here?

BTW, I did search the forum before posting this but I thought my fave hill food deserved its own thread!

I'm with you on this one. Got a bit lazy though and started getting the ready sliced stuff and I like to spread it with Olivio spread. Also Fig Rolls, Asda own brand are my favourites.

Never got past one loaf on a single walk though!

Nope, not for me.
I prefer dried fish, the sort that's popular in Iceland (the country, not the shop). It's practically weightless, packs flat, you can eat it raw on the move (chewy like beef jerky) and can be rehydrated for soups, stews etc. Unopened, it keeps for years. Full of nutritional goodies as well. Unlike Malt Loaf, there are no side-effects (or should that be rear-effects?).

Malt loaf is the ideal food - breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper - who could want more???

Soreen Malt Loaf - on offer at two for the price of one last week at the Co-op!

Malt Loaf Haiku

Brooding, warm brown brick
Sweet and chewy pick-me-up
Spread with butter - Mmmmm.....!

Love the stuff. The more bashed around it gets in your rucksack, the better it seems to taste.

It's also superb for cycling - you can cram one in a bottle cage (and get funny looks) and I reckon it's good for 15 miles of calories minimum.

Hurrah! Malt loaf.

I also eat it when I'm desperate and have to grab lunch at a local store where the sandwiches look bad.

If you eat too much at once though you can get overdose symptoms...

Also good for backpacking - you can cram it in the pack and it doesn't matter what shape it is when it comes out again, it's still perfectly edible!!!

Loverly jubberly. It's something I rarely go on the hills without.

Got two in the cupboard now. Nobody else in the house likes it, so I know it's safe and isn't gonna get snaffled by some thieving oik.

Ever tried it toasted? (Obviously, not on the hill.)

I've made it at home - yum! Very easy :)

Love malt loaf! Also Jaffa Cakes the cheap ones at Asda are 25p a pack and taste better than the originals! Low in fat and full of carbs! Mmmmmmmm

P.S. I eat about 8 packs a week! So beware the addiction!

Malt loafs and jaffa cakes! How British is this? :-)

My other essential has to be Marmite. Marmite and cheese sarnies on the hill can't be beat in winter.

Ewwwwwwwww!!! Philby you minger! ;-)

Peanut Butter and Strawberry Jam sandwiches rock!

.... ouch... there goes another tooth!

Can you imagine any other company promoting the fact a lot of people don't like there product? I have a lot of respect for them for it!

... and to be honest I've never really tasted it, but can imagine it not being too good on my rear region when walking?

You've never tasted it??? Get thee down to the shops now and buy a small jar. You won't regret it!

Oh, and it has no "side effects" at all. Apart from being slightly addictive....
