Hi all!

Planning my first trip over to the Alps, maybes end of this Summer, but its looking more like next summer. No harm in being organised tho....

Currently own a Rab Photon primaloft for insulation, and find its mega warm. I did have a Rab down but got rid because I was scared to get it wet with spending most of my time on the hill in England and Scotland.

With the Alps being alot colder and dryer, should I start looking for a second hand down jacket?..maybes a Rab Summit, or a M.E equivalent...?

I'm happy with all my layers to go under a primaloft, merino, powerstretch, vapour rise etc...and of course a pro shell on top...I'll be warm enough surely?????

Thanks in advance people, I always get excellent advice on here.

 Ta, Jacko.

What altitude are you going up to ? and what accommodation will you be using ? I don't have that much experience of the Alps but recommend you plan for any occasion. You might find yourself in a blizzard but you might not see a cloud for your your entire trip, and it gets pretty warm at low altitude. Im touring the Haute Savoie between Sallanches and Annency in a few weeks and plan to take, 2 light merino base layers, haglofs barrier and montane minimus. Im planning to wild camp <2000ft each night. Hopefully Ill be covered

Hopefully I'll be summiting Mont Blanc so 15,000 ft, but we will be using the huts located on the mountain. Having checked out a few online equipment lists, they say bring one if you have one, either down or primaloft. But its not essential, some sites say don't bother you won't need one and its just excess weight/space loss....

Your touring trip sounds great, i did a quick google of the places you mentioned and it looks amazing....hope you have a good one!

Thanks for your advice mate.

I agree with what you've read you don't need down for MB, just make do with your UK stuff.
