I use Rab Hispars occasionally in winter - seem pretty good.Had for 4 winters now, but haven't used them days on end.
I took mine in at the back(size L was needed for height) as I have skinny legs and disliked the flappyness...
Outdoor Research look very well made and to have a good range too.
Ankle gaiters are good for keeping crap out of shoes, but not for keeping troos dry/clean
