Hello, Just a heads up, just found out that karrimor is still alive (last i heard they where in liquidation) and the shocking thing was is that they have brought out a new jacket and pants made from the Polartec Neoshell fabric. what do you think?

heres the link: http://www.karrimor.jp/clothing/index.html

Other people know more about it, but I think that the Japanese Karrimor is a different company paying to use the name, or something like that. The Karrimor stuff in the UK is owned by Sports Direct and Field and Trek I believe. However, the products that you linked to (clickable link) look quite good. Interesting to see some more uses of Neoshell.

well in japan that seems pretty cheep, compared to mammut prices of their neoshell anad the karrimor style looks to me anyway better.

i just went out around tokyo today looking for the jacket. however most of the shops only carry the bags and cheeper jackets

I just spent all my money on a new sleeping bag and pack so was looking for a bargain summer waterproof...

Everybody has been wandering if the new ALPINISTE EVENT is a bargain or a load of crap...well I bought one for £90 quid as curiosity was getting the better of me.

It arrived...I checked the stitching and seams...all as well finished as my Crux Flak (which I hate due to baggy shoulders and crazy tight waist). Ive been using it for a week now and its bloody brilliant...hood works very well and is unobtrusive...arms are cracking length and well cut...very comfortable.

I actually found myself trying to cover the Karrimor logo on my first outing...but now Im proud as punch.

My size small weighs 398 gms on our digital scales which are def accurate within 3 gms (tested). which seems very decent for a 3 layer EVENT garment.

So cant speak for their other new serious Uk offerings but I can tell you the Alpiniste Event jacket is not the crap they are now known for...but a very capable BARGAIN!!!

Yeah...it kept me dry in about 2 - 2.5 hours of heavy rain shower.

Seriously I was really apprehensive...kept labels sitting ready to go back on for return...but it is a super jacket. Its actually really well cut...better fit than my Rab Latok Alpine (replacing as wrecked it on some nice sharp slate rock).

I know someone else who's just bought one, he set out on a 4 day trip today.

If i remember to get his thoughts on it i'll post them here.

Yeah do because I started doing a bit of googling after spotting them and found so many people asking about them but everbody seemed to be waiting for someone else to buy one and review it before they all took the plunge...

I am seriously suprised at how well it works for me...and I suppose at the end of the day the material is EVENT so the rest is down to construction...and it seems top notch...certainly as good as any of my Montane, Rab, Crux stuff. I was baffled by the hood at first as there appeared only 2 strings to pull to tighten hood and once pulled I couldnt get them to retract...at first I thought...oh no 'heres the first issue' but then realised the other wee adjusters are hidden inside the material...you just press them to release...they are hidden whereas on my other jackets are exposed. To be honest...hiding them inside the material has solved the annoyance of having that little loop of string perched at the side of each eye was really really annoying on my Rab.

But like everything else...its so personal...it may not work for others...but the quality is there for sure.

Ive just used mine in some serious wet weather here in Canada, its Very good, it fits me very well, the stitching (on mine) is fault less the storm zip is quite difficult to get going but will get better over time but more importantly the zip let NO water in, it doesnt have pit zips and the pockets are mesh lined, its long enough to just about cover my bum but doesnt come down to my knees .
Overall, I took a gamble on this jacket (Living in Canada) but must say im VERY happy with it, and would even go as far and say that it will be my goto wet weather coat which is saying something as it is up against some stiff cupboard buddies

Im sort of thinking mine is going to become my 'go to' jacket too...due to the absolute cracking fit. I agree...the stitching and construction is spot on and of course the zips are YKK which are weel proven and pretty much industry standard. The Event is just that...Event!

just back from morning walk in miserable icy cold showers...dry as a bone...no water ingress around hood or zips...just a bloody good jacket!

Buy one folks...cover the Karrimor logo if you dont want to be seen in the brand...but tell you what...if they start making more like this then the future looks positive!

I was looking at these in my local Sports Direct and was reasonably impressed. I didn't part with cash though as all of the jackets I saw had the pin of the security tag put through the taped seam at the back of the neck. The manager said that was how they received them from the warehouse. What a waste!!!!!

Order from the current online batch. Mine had no pin holes anywhere and local store had none either so maybe they have wised up.

Its an exceptional jacket...really is.

No pin holes in mine either. But honestly, would a pin hole really let any water in even if it didnt seal its self?

I remember there being a discussion about this in a previous thread about Sports Direct aka F&T. IIRC the line was that it would invalidate the warranty on the jacket making it impossible to return if you had a problem with the material functioning as advertised.

My friend seems to be backing this up, said it's performed well on the last two days in the Peaks, and it's been raining stair rods here.

God forbid Karrimor kit done good!.  Some OMER's will have to swallow humble pie or at least cover up the Karrimoor logo's!.
18/04/2012 at 22:04

Its the biggest surpise piece of kit Ive bought in the last few years (except my PHD minimus). Im tellin ya...if your after a really good Event jacket with an athletic cut and a nice arm length that is light yet well capable of prolonged pack use then you just wont find a better jacket...£90 online folks...dont buy instore at £99.99.

And you know...my wifes still pretty young and with it (25) and she reckons its the best looking jacket Ive bought in last few years...so thats always a winner!

18/04/2012 at 22:05
Yes I was wanting to cover up the logo on my first day wearing but now Im proud as punch...they have made a really excellent bit of kit here.
18/04/2012 at 22:25
wandering dave welcome to the small, but hopefully growing band, of people who are prepared to voice the opinion that all Karrimor kit is NOT Crap and life as an owner of Karrimor kit did not cease when Mike Parsons left to startup OMM.
