Hi everyone, I've just looked through my latest Lidl brochure, and there will be some walking gear coming out on the 24th of this month (in the bristol area anyway). One of the items is a daysack selling at £17.99 (sorry cant post a link at the moment). Why not have a look at it, as it looks strangely familiar!!!

The only downside i can see to it, is that it is stated as being for loads up to 35kg!....All I can say is that I walk everyday with a Berghaus crusader with 35kg in it, and thats fine...but as for a flimsy looking daysack, I'd say that was stretching things a bit too far.

I bet it's a 35 litre pack. A litre of water weighs in at 1kg. I bet the mistake starts somewhere around there

Ray, are you thinking Berghaus Arete 35 copy? If the quality is good it might be a decent buy for day-walkers on a budget.

Have to say I'm tempted by the altimeter watch - been thinking of getting an altimeter for a wee while but wouldn't use it that often so didn't want to spend a wad, but at £20 I think I'll give it a try.

Sorry everyone, I was rushing earlier...The correct date of relaease is the 21st, and the stated max weight is 30kg not 35.

Maybe it looks (well to me anyway) like a combination of a Lowe Alpine "mountain attack", and one of the Osprey packs. Whatever it is, I may pick one up to try it out, although I think that my OMM Jirishanca will always be my favourite daysack

This one, you mean?

Yes, it does look rather like an Arete, doesn't it, bar the gear loops.

Max load 30kg.  Hmmm no thanks...

Captain, you stun me.....At first I thought you meant 30kg wasnt heavy enough, but then thought you might mean you don't want to carry THAT much..

SOOO WHICH ONE?

Perhaps they meant 30lb. Even that seems a lot for a daysack.

I suspect Lidl's claims come from some lab test - "we put 30kg in and the bag didn't split" - rather than recomended usage. They're never too accurate on that sort of thing.

However, the manufacture quality of their products can be pretty good. I have had a lot of trouble-free mileage from their running socks for example. So if it really looks up to the job (stitching/fabrics etc.) then it probably is.

Petie - The watch is not that good a deal as the Fielfandtrek website has their stormlite version for £24.99. Any problems you are more likely to get better service from F&T.

Still, I will be getting one if I can. A sucker for a saving.

I bought a 25 ltr bag from Lidl that included a water bag for about £6, it is still going strong and is very comfortable. The running socks are great

I've got one of these - happened to be staying near a branch in that week - so was able to indulge my addiction to rucksacks (Is there a Rucksacks Anonymous?)

It's a fully featured i.e. lots of pockets and lashing points on the lid, 34 litre pack with a trampoline back made by a German company called Kober who apparently have been making them since 1873. Weight is about 1kg.

I loaded it fairly full (about 6 kg) to try it out and it was reasonably good to carry. The trampoline back was fairly flexible so the actual gap is quite small. For this load I felt that the hip belt was a little too small with insufficient wraparound. I don't think it carries as well as my cheapish Gelert Oxygen 35 litre which has a similar size

Not sure whether I'll keep mine as I have similar sized ones already, but for £17.99 it's excellent value (Like much of the Aldi/Lidl stuff).Gues they'd sell out pretty quickly.

BTW - THe TGO is doing Osprey Kestrel 28s free if you take out a sub.

It is a 35 litre pack. Cost £16.99. Bought one this morning. Going to use mainly for "cabin luggage" for camera tripod and other bits and pieces.  Take care in checking it though as some of the stitching was suspect on one I looked at

They'll fob you off with 'an alternative' like they did with me.
