Oh dear indeed!

cant see the problem myself.it does not matter if chavs and celebs are wearing it.whats important is whether the product works in the hills.not wearing the stuff because its become common is just another form of snobbery. i wear berghaus myself mainly, but when its worn out i may try other manufacturers.not gonna worry about kids with baseball caps and tracky bottoms wearing same gear.perhaps i'm a secret chav on the side as i think the arctic monkeys are a good band!

Oh dear oh dear oh dear.

the north face took a nose dive about five years ago anyway in my opinion.

the opnly trouble with these product becoming comman is the fact that the technical side of the garments usually get forgotten about.

I dont really care what I look like when I'm trekking at 3000 foot. I just want to be able to have confidence the clothing I'm wearing is gonna do its job.

Check ebay out its full of rip-off north face gear. this is what fashion creates. greed.

I'm a Rab and berguase man myself.

A few weeks ago I was looking through the North face jackets on Ebay, and out of the 150+ on there, I only saw ONE genuine jacket. That's pretty shocking, and some people are paying high prices (up to £100) for this fake gear. I'm suprised they haven't done more about it. Your average joe thinks you can buy a brand new North Face XCR jacket for £50

I love Berghaus, just waiting for them to release some fresh jackets as their range has been the same for 2-3 years now

Ordered a Mountain Equipment Firefly over a Berghaus Paclite, hopefully the right decision

I would 'generally' avoid eBay (and this is probably a great generalisation) but there is a *lot* of stolen and fake gear on there!

Or at least give yourself a fighting chance and only buy from people with good feedback - ideally 100+ ratings and 98-99%+ overall rating.

But also have a quick look at the actual feedback and be wary if all the feedback is very recent or from accounts with very low feedback themselves - some people effectively 'buy' feedback or setup multiple accounts.

Also only pay with Paypal - sending postal orders, cash or cheques gives you less protection.

Richard

Your right about them taking a nose dive about five years ago, thats when they were acquired by vanity fair.

I have a north face starburst tent, made prior to vanity fair purchasing the company. The difference between it and the newer tadpole is huge. The starburst is a genuine 4 season tent and alot of design details has been lost on the tadpole.

Current TNF stuff seems ok - I actually like my Windwall 1 Jacket and the new DIAD Jacket also looks good...?
11/02/2006 at 12:51
Yeah North Face is just one company in a big list owned by one big company.

Barking Mad, I've seen many people with good and high feedback selling this fake gear. They don't know that it's fake either, I've seen them answering questions saying as far as they know it's genuine
11/02/2006 at 12:54
... but looking on the Superbrands web site it seems to be cool you have to be 18-35 - wear TNF, use St. Tropez, drink Guiness and drive a Saab <lol>
11/02/2006 at 12:57
If someone said 'as far as I know it's genuine' I would avoid.

Surely they should 'know' if it's genuine as it was not stolen and hopefully sourced from an official distributor.

Went into Cardiff Trekit today and it was full of "sorts", not the outdoor variety, buying? You guessed it. Lovely TNF gear. No bargains in any make and as long as these idiots keep this up there won't be.
The trouble is it's spilling off into other brands too at this particular shop. I bought my wife a lovely ME down jacket there for Christmas £20 off. It's back to full price now and they're flying off the racks.
I ask myself, "Am I being a bit harsh calling them idiots".
Well, yes, they are idiots. I mean why pay £200 plus for a WP jacket when you are only going to wear it from the Merc or the Beamer to the office and from the hard standing in your garden to your front door.
Then it is a freeish country isn't it? So far.

As long as this trend doesn't affect Montane... or heaven forbid P*****!
11/02/2006 at 23:53
Doesn't the fact that the North Face put this 'achievement' on their site speak volumes?
12/02/2006 at 00:00
Keith Byrne, UK Marketing Manager of The North Face, comments: "Although we’re proud to be listed as one of the coolest brands in the UK, we will never forget our roots as the premier supplier of technically innovative outdoor products. All of our products are tested to the extreme and are suited to specific outdoor activities, however when we see them being worn by style setters as diverse as Madonna, Tom Cruise, Sarah Jessica Parker and Ian Wright, we know that they have appeal to the fashion conscious too."

2nd sentence says it all!
12/02/2006 at 10:48
As if there have never been fashion slaves amongst outdoor pursuits punters. There are many who just have "this season's model".
Doesn't seem right though does it? Non OP'ers adopting our uniform?
Where's Captain Hurricane when you need him?
12/02/2006 at 10:54
no north face for me. leave it for madonna and tom
12/02/2006 at 11:18
What will be the result of the North Face putting this award on their site?

They're more likely to put off the real outdoor enthusiasts, but gain more more high street fashion followers
12/02/2006 at 11:22
Don't why it should put off real outdoors enthusiasts - surely they buy on whether it works and is comfortable?

If it meets those criteria surely NOT buying it because Madonna has been seen wearing it is just as bad as buying it because she HAS been seen wearing it.

(Says me sitting here in my TNF Windwall 1 - which I quite like!)
