Actually that's more ME being 'cheap' in terms of stretch pro shell jackets - Haglofs Ratio was 475 back in 2010 etc.

A lot of this is probably down to ME being a (principally) UK company. The UK has very strong, relatively cheap, competition in the form of the Event shells from Montane and RAB.

That doesn't really exist elsewhere so there's naturally a higher premium attaching to pro shell stuff there. And with the 'net if you're international you have to keep prices more or less stable across countries. So......

Try it with fleeces, trousers and the like.

TNF do some down bags which are cheaper than similar spec ME ones, but I wouldn't extrapolate from that to say all TNF gear is very good value, or all ME stuff is expensive. The company that does come to mind as charging a uniform hefty premium just because it can is Dead Bird.

I got a 2nd hand softshell off here I find excellent for work in winter (softshell doesn't factor in my regular outdoor gear).  Mrs also got a down vest off here - excellent but like my soft shell it's for non-hill use.  Lad had some excellent TNF trail shoes. I also find their convertable pants excellent - got a couple of pairs & I use them for 2-3 season backpacking & walking.  My MTN25 tent is pretty damn good too.  I've seen the anti TNF snobbery plenty times on OM - makes me smile when it's so overt in the 'wouldn't be seen dead in it' sense.

edit - Our TNF Trailhead 8 is one of the best family tents I've had & every time we take it out we love it.  Solid as a rock.

Mind, I have my own snobbery - a few brands I won't be seen dead in, but I keep that to myself.

Yes, I found one type of their convertable shorts that I got are a nice cut for shorts - and with an appropriate level of pockets, including one zipped one behind the right pocket that can take my phone.   They do seem to have a large range, some of which are less useful.

I also find their trail shoes comfortable - hedgehog trainers are pretty reasonable.

I have heard that TNF are in the process of opening all their own shops and will not be allowing any other retailer to stock their gear?!?!

Patagucci insisted that Outside open an exclusive store for their brand in Hathersage .  Then again, if you attend the “tent” sales at Hathersage the vast majority of the gear is Patagonia, it obviously does not sell well.

One thing I think we can all agree on;  there are certain bits of kit we all love and would buy again and again.
