Are these wonder`s all they are cracked up to be ? Are standard poles better ?

I have pacer poles weight 2 pounds(both).

& cheap budget poles 1 pound.

I prefer 2 x 8oz poles on a longer trip like TGO challenge that i've just completed.

but "use up" my pacers for w/e walks.when weight isn't a problem. they are stronger & dont bend if you fall on them etc like cheaper ones would, & the grips are very comfy.

but lots of people swear by them.

I could never get on with straight poles and so was very sceptical about pacerpoles, despite Pacerpoles having "proper" hand grips.

I wouldn't be without them now on longer walks, particularly when carrying a load, but I still wouldn't want a pair of "ordinary" poles - the design just doesn't make sense.

I have regular pair of Pacerpoles and a pair of carbon ends which are much lighter and stiffer, but they don't contract down as much as the regular ends.

Just received a pair of full carbon Pacerpoles (3 piece). If your bothered about weight and like Pacerpoles these are the ones for you. Walked from Malham to Todmorden (Pennine Way) with them on Saturday and they're brilliant. I still like the alloy ones as well, can't decide which are best.

Carbon poles Steve! You've gone soft :-)

My alloy Pacers saw me safely over Scotland again over the last couple of weeks. They really are very different to other poles I've used.

I don't feel you can tell the difference Andy but some people buy things on weight alone not function.I did the challenge with alloy ones myself last year.. that is untill i left them in Glen Feshie..DOH!

the difference is easy to explain.
get up out of a chair with arms.
put your hands as holding normal poles and lever your self out of the chair.
now lever yourself out of the chair the normal way with your palms on the arms.
decide for yourself what's easier and more comfortable.

I was talking of the weight difference between alloy and Carbon pacerpoles Parky not stanndard poles and Pacerpoles.

I bought some Pacerpoles after 'mislaying' a pair of Leki poles. The handles are really natural and comfortable, and mean that you don't use the wrist straps to take the weight as with conventional poles. I wouldn't go back to standard poles now, even if they may be a bit lighter.

The only downside from my perspective is a simple consequence of the handle design: they pack rather awkwardly together, for example if you are trying to strap both to one side of rucksack while doing some scrambling. And I guess they may be less convenient if using them as tent pole substitutes. In my book this is a small price to pay.

steve, i was replying to the OP.

Oops! sorry Parky, good practicle example to get the point across.

Thanks very much guys OM brilliant as usual for finding out information. Looks like it`s a pair of Pacerpoles for me then. Now then which alloy or carbon ?

They might well be the best for you however I'd recommend trying them before you buy as not everyone gets on with them - for example I find them horrible.

Stephen..this may seem like a silly question but are you 100% sure you used them properly?
You don't walk with them like conventional poles with points out in front. you push off the ground at your sides or even slightly behind.

Ali v's Carbon

I think there is a difference between the poles.

The most notable difference is that the ali ones vibrate more than the carbon ones when they hit the ground, which I assume is because the ali ones aren't as stiff, which might have consequences if a lot of weight were put on a pole during a stumble.

The other noticable difference is that it is much easier to place the carbon pole accurately, which is handy in rocky situations.

If it takes less energy to use them then it isn't noticable, I'm still knackered at the end of the day.

I want a pair of three piece carbon poles.

That's the bit that seemed horrible to me.
