No longer made...

OK, my Viento is yonks old and battered and torn and I look like a tramp wearing it. So...for winter use I want to replace it but as mentioned on another thread it is no longer made.

Luckily, some stockists still have 'em in stock but does anyone know WHY it was discontinued as it ticks all the boxes as far as I can see esp the side zips for use with a harness?

Just curious...

Must just not have sold. They don't drop jackets  often (is this the first?!) but they have of course got a wide range and finite manufacturing capacity.

Perhaps everyone who wanted side zips ended up getting one of their smocks instead? A full length front zip + side zips seems like overkill to me. You lose the giant chest pocket for one thing.

Or maybe the upper arm vents didn't catch on.

Even once it has sold out  the kindly folk at Cioch would no doubt be happy to do a 'homage' to the jacket if you ask specifically for one....

I have a Viento for sale in Classifieds if that's of interest.

Cioch. Yeah, forgot about them...gonna have a look now.

You're right about the upper arm vents not catching on but I reckon they're great for cooling you down. Still...

Cheers CB. It's identical to my nearly departed one though and I fancy a change in colour. Shallow I know

possibly awful colours. possibly ahead of its time so didn't sell. i think it's wonderful. i have a nice half price "special" olive colour one.

the side zips are short going up to the pocket. perfect for putting your pack belt under so you don't truss yourself up inside it and for getting things out of your trouser pockets.

Yep, agree with all of that Parky. Sometimes a company get something really really spot on and then discontinue it in the name of "progress". Ah, a shame

The colours are sh*t though!

not my lovely olive one......mwah ha ha.

Mine's a nice sensible navy blue - no garish contrast colours - no naff reflective piping.....quite smart in it's own way

Slate grey with totally permanently ingrained Kinder Scout peat and red Moroccan dust highlights. Best thing I ever purchased though. Am turning into a sentimental old sod about this coat

They certainly give a feeling of dependability in rough weather & rough terrain; something my Paclite just can't match (as gaffer-taped tears will attest!).

Ah, CB it brings a tear to the eye. Almost feel like starting (yet another)Paramo thread. But I wont....

ah! and the properly designed pockets that things don't fall out off even with the zip open for a bit of venting and they still keep the rain out.

hell, it just does the job. well.

paramo's blurb probably highlighted the features: pockets you can put things in. a hood you can put on your head. a two way zip to fasten jacket.

i tell them everytime i go into the paramo shop it's the db's.

No, the first Paramo was the Nevada smock, long gone but you can see where the Velez started off.  The Cuzco disappeared too, the first jacket launched alongside the Nevada bears little relation to anything in the range now IIRC.

Sometimes a company get something really really spot on and then discontinue it in the name of "progress".

Sometimes they do (Rohan are particularly good at it IMHO), but in the case of  the Nevada the progress really has been progress.

But often the case that you can't keep good things in the line that don't sell: it's a business, not a design museum.

Looking at the Viento... I was put off by too many whistles and bells adding too much to the weight.  Compare and contrast to the Finisterre Storm Track, which is my idea of what I'd want in such a jacket: it gives you a 25% weight saving and still has everything I want.

how do you get on with the finisterre peter considering you're a "hot" one?
30/09/2008 at 14:22

Phil

You mention some stockists still have them in stock, can you let me know which ones?

I thought I did a thorough search a few weeks ago of all the big stockists and a Google search to pick up any others but couldn't find any.

I don't have one, I would notionally quite like one assuming the fit is okay.  And I'd like it for ski touring where the ambients are rarely above freezing and often several degrees below.  However, I would anticipate carrying it when the sun's out and the wind's off, just as my wife carries her Velez.

But there again since we're in notion territory, a Storn Track made with the new AL outer fabric.  And in red, please!

Pete.
