Another slant:  if you think you may spend lots of time in the future hanging round in cold places, a pair of primaloft type trousers can be rather nice - and good survival gear too, should ou be stuck out somewhere.  Most have full zips so you can pull them on even when wearing crampons. Fairly weather resistant, too.  Arguably a luxury, but damned nice when conditions dictate!  I suffer from cold feet - that's how I justified my second pair...  I lent the older pair to a mate on our trip north last winter - but as it turned out to be one of the mildest, they weren't used.  But great for hanging around in.  Another mate and I took same to Patagonia last Nov/Dec, which enabled us to sit around camp in the mornings and evenings to enjoy being there to the full.

I was Cotswolds the other day and they seemed to have a number of Rab down jackets on clearance?

Just a thought ...

How about a down waistcoat and an synthetic jacket to go over it?
