A friend of mine gave me a Goretex jacket they no longer need, but it stinks of fag smoke. I've already washed it in NikWax Tech Wash and TX Direct, but it still smells. Any suggestions?

Ugh!

Give it a really good wash in the machine with ordinary washing powder (the everyday stuff you use), then rinse about 50 million times, then do the Tech Wash and TX Direct thing again. I'd probably do a lot of rinsing in the bath by hand to save time and possibly water.

Give it back

or

Flog it on Ebay saying it was from a smoke free house... well your anyway

Had the same ting with a leather jacket. Only time did the job.

Just leave it a couple of  weeks in an open space, windy if possible. Eventually the smell will disappear.

There is a mix of aeromatherapy oils that will help, google and you'll find more than a few. The one I use contains: lavendar, tee tree, orange, bergamot, cedar and lemon/citronella.

aromatherapy oils will screw up the goretex - the goretex will treat it like plain dirt.

Smoke is smell is very hard to get rid of (I used to work for an insurance contractor  who dealt with the aftermath of fires and floods in houses).

You have three options:

a) give it back.

b) Do as Kate suggested - but with non-bio washing detergent - be prepared to wash it many times befoe techwashing and TX10.

b) take it to a a flood/fire recovery company - some have an ozone chamber which they use to deodorise smoke contaminated furniture and clothes where cleaning hasnt got rid of the smell - but be aware that the gortex membrane may react with the ozone.

Hii I should have mentioned the oil is atomised, being diluted 25 drops to 5litres of water, and applied via a fine mist sprayer. There is a lot of info on google.

I would do the Outside on the line thing for a week or two

Then do as Kate suggested with the detergent, then tech and tx

will still effect the DWR/Goretex as they really hate oil/fat contamination - even its from body  oils.  I really wouldnt use this method
