Replacement for Montane Terra converts?

They don't make the convertible terras any more -what can I replace them with?

I've been happily wearing the Terra converts (the zip-off Terra pants) from Montane for the last few years. I finally wore a hole in them, so I went looking to buy a replacement pair. To my surprise, Montane have dropped the zip-off version of the Terras from their line-up.

What can people recommend for lightweight but sturdy trousers with zip-off legs? Or should I forget about the zip-offs and rely on the venting in the new Terras?

Well neither RAB or ME seem to currently do convertibles either, so I'd presume the market must be quite small.

Haglofs have one style, Rohan 3, Pattaguicci ditto and Fjallraven huge numbers! No doubt others too. Very few with the reinforcements that Terra's have, if some quite tough fabrics.

I've never been tempted mind, so no idea beyond Chris Townsend in some TGO review emphasising how important it is to get the fit right. (Rohan presumably easiest for checking that.). Might well be worth trying the standard Terra's though - the vent does help a little and they're really not very warm.

You might be able to pick some up online if you're not fussy about colour. Some sites have the odd pair or two kicking around

Can you not repair the hole?

I probably should have mentioned that I live in Australia  - hence the delay in replying

Thanks for all the suggestions ( I didn't even know that Fjallraven made clothes!).  The rip might be repairable, but the fabric is really quite worn now so they probably wouldn't last much longer anyway.

It never crossed my mind to look for old stock of the converts that is still out there.  I  reckon that's the option I'll take.  Rohan gear is stocked at a few places in Oz, so I will try to check them out in person too, in case I can't get what I want from old stock.

Thanks again!

Living in Oz, don't you want something thicker than Terra pants to protect you from scorpion/spider/snake/various other nasty creature  bites?

I wear stretchy trousers which easily roll up to knee length when it`s warm... sorted.

Hi, this is Jake from Montane. It will probably too late for Stuart, but for your information, we will have a stretch Terra convertible pants for the UK spring of 2013. We currently have samples and are preselling to the UK trade. I don't know for sure, but our Australian partner Mainpeak, will probably have them by April 2013.

I thought we`d never see a stretch convertible trouser as the zip half way down the leg obviously won`t stretch. But if Montane have made it work, they could be onto a winner and I`d certainly give them a try!

Hi Jake

Really pleased to hear that there is a stretch convertable version.  Please tell me that they have not ignored us females and intend to do a version for us????????

I came across some some years ago Mountain Hardwear Yuka convertables which worked fantastically and was upset when they discontinued them. The zip worked as it wasn't mid thigh but just below knee so didn't constrict.

Several people doing it - those Rohan trailblazers, Norrona etc.

You just cut the lower leg loosely enough for it work. Except in tights its only really the knee panel upwards which ever stretches anyway

Yes, also TNF - despite being a brand some folk don't take too seriously these days - their stretch Trekker convertibles are really comfortable and practical...  my summer trousers of choice for a couple of years now, from North Wales to Nepal.

That's a hell of a trek Matt, no wonder it took you a couple of years!

The trousers were still fine afterwards though
