rubber loops & tent pegs

Most of the tents I remember over the years pre 1980's had a rubber loop at the end of each guy that you passed the peg through.
Afaik, they were there to compensate for any slackening of the guy lines during the night so you didn't have to get up and readjust.

I've fitted elastic loops to my Akto and Vango guys during the last couple of years and sagging of the tent as the weather/temperature changes has been much less.

I've just bought a new tent and, once again, it doesn't have any elasticity built into the pegging points. Which made me think why not?
Does anybody know? I'm wondering if there is something I don't know that means I making an error retro fitting them.

It depends on the design and the fabric used.Film type "fabric" like spinnaker,Cuben and PTFE (eVent/GoreTex) do not shrink stretch.Silnylon at the other end can stretch enough to need more than just shockcords particularly when supported only by trekking poles. So for example I had them on my TT Contrail then removed them because I like it really taut and could not get that with shockcords.Franco

I use them on my tipi. With less wind I use the maximum loop I've retrofitted. With much wind I fold the loop a couple of times to get a real taut result.

I had in  mind  A frame type shelters where the unsupported fabric can be rather long . But yes they should work better on a tipi/pyramid shelter or shelters with shorter panels for each guypoint to support .Franco

Aha. I have just bought a Mini Peak (all on other thread) and that's PU coated nylon I think I've read somewhere. It looks a very similar material to my Vango and that has worked better with the shockcord loops. I'll give it a try.
Thanks for the help.

Small world.

I was involved in the changes between the Mini Peak and the MP II. Enjoy...

Indeed.
I saw your input on a NZ blog from about 2009 when I was researching the tent :0)
