Rucksack Pole Attachment

Pole attachment

Bought the wife a new rucksack which is perfect for her in everyway except it doesn't have any pole attachment loops.

There's a small loop at the top and one near the base of the rucksack but not large enough for a walking pole. Looking for something I can attach to these loops to hold a walking pole securely, ideas guys?

Some strong shockcord and a Nexus Springlock cord-lock will see to the attachment. Put each end of the shockcord through the cord-lock and knot it so you've got a loop. Feed this through your pack's small loop, then wrap it around the poles, push the cord-lock through the shockcord loop like a toggle, and pull the ends tight. Carry them handles-up - there's no way they'll fall out and it's also safer for other folk!

If I haven't explained that very well then take a look at the PODsacs website - it's the way they've done their ice axe shaft attachments for years.

I guess the poles might swing a little from the small loops - but you could always run another bit of shockcord across the pack horizontally betwen the small loops and push the poles behind that before you secure them, that should keep them stable.

You can get the necessary shockcord and the right cord-locks from Needlesports - just scroll down here

Have a look at this here I recommended not so long ago.

May not be exactly what you after, but is very handy as an extra temp attachment.

With the loops at the bottom you can twist the loop around several times to make for a smaller hole and put the pole through. Its not ideal but I walked nine miles with mine like that yesterday and it worked fine until I put the sack down then it pushes them out. Something I've been wondering about though as I recently got into using poles. Will have a look at what Matt says above too

Here's another clever solution.

Some good ideas guys.

Not exactly sure of the pack Parky (as I just pay for it ) but think it's a Deuter Cycle....... explains the lack of pole attachments ........ but after trying every type of rucksack in the size she wanted it's the only one she felt comfortable in.

You could use the old style ice axe method. Shove them down between your shoulder blades. Surprisingly it isn't uncomfortable and they can be got at without stopping. thats what I do

ALS's link is basically a variation on the Osprey Stow On The Go system, or the other way round, which is the only production system I like, but arguably better for sticking the poles better out of the way to the side of the pack. Really neat idea.
