Running shoe gaiters

Interested in any experiences of gaiters for running shoes - more to keep out debris and, especially, ticks, than water. How well does elastication of the hem work, given that lack of a raised arch on many shoes precludes the use of a strap? BIG shoes if it makes a difference.

I use Dirty Girl gaiters; really good. She does XL and Dang! sizes.

Ticks (together with most life) don't like me and I've not had a problem with them in a couple of seasons of Scottish forays. I treated mine with proofer but it was only so-so.

Velcro on the heel and a front clip cinches them down pretty tight - mine have not ridden up really even with cross-country heather bashing; that activity does kick the shit out of them a bit though and they pill-up.

I fit them to all my outdoor shoes now.

I've used these gaiters for a couple of years from Bob at Backpacking light

http://www.backpackinglight.co.uk/product290.asp?PageID=34

and they do the job well in poorer weather. Very durable and have a material understrap. This will start to fray with wear but can be easily replaced with Dyneema for example. I've considered Dirty Girl before however have been put off by their flimsyness but after ed's post may buy some for better weather to keep the dust and stones out.

This shot of my shapely pins should dissuade you....

Those are Keen mids (they leaked 2nd time out).

I stick to shoes that let water in and therefore out - find the sensation strangely sensual, but stones - grrrr!

Not used them myself, but plenty of orienteers use some or other flavour.

Clicky for a selection...

I found that just about any type of strap affair under the shoe wore through fairly quickly so gave up on them and have since not found the need. I use some shoe gaiters I got from REI when on a USA trip, but the Dirty Girl ones seem good -- like the velcro idea.

Must admit to basically never getting stuff coming in myself either. (Even when heather bashing.).

Suppose it must be down to some quirk of walking style

Something to be going on with. I read a mag article in a bothy once, some bloke who'd drilled holes diagonally down through the soles of his shoes (Inov8, whatever); threaded cord through from the gaiter and tied a retaining knot, such that the knot sat recessed within the sole tread. Might be worth trying out with a knackered set of shoes.

It's more the ticks, really (not related to that tickalert site that's just popped up). Don't want the little feckers crawling up me keks, so I'm after longer gaiters that'll be more secure than tucking trousers into socks...

OR used to do permethrin treated gaiters - I've a pair I've never used (might be too small/not suitable for you). Or just treat whatever you get. OK so you'll die a horrible death due to the permethrin - life's hard.

Inov-8 do gaiters, http://www.inov-8.com/New/Global/Product-View-DebrisGaiter-32.html?L=26 and also a sock/gaiter all in one combo, http://www.inov-8.com/New/Global/Product-View-Debrisoc-38.html?L=26

Both have thin, but very durable elastic that goes under the feet and as it's thin then you just ensure it's between the tread on the sole. It can wear through though, and they sell replacements at £1.

Don't use the tie under the shoe any more just sew and stick velcro on any gaiter.I use the Dirty Girl ones when it is dry.

Velcro sounds like it could be a go-er the next time I buy a pair of shoes. The Inov8 ones look a bit short for my needs.

OR Flex Tex

I use the flex tex ones, more a proper gaiter than debris , quite a close fit and fairly water resistant which might not be what your after.

They also do a more waterproof one OR Salamander
