Salomon X-Ultra or XA Pro 3D

Thoughts?

I currently have a pair of Merrell Intercept GTX approach shoes, which are my go to footwear for a lot of activities. I wear them for walking in when I'm not heading anywhere too muddy or when carrying a pack, to the pub, when shopping, gardening, dog walking, pretty much anything really. They are however now coming to the end of their life; the soles are wearing pretty flat and they're beginning to look rather scruffy for casual use. My plan is to retire them from most jobs other than gardening and diy and that's where the two Salomon options come in as possible replacements.

Having looked at both of them, I can't see too much of a difference, other than that the Ultra seems to have a more rigid sole than the XA Pro. Has anyone owned a pair of both of them and been able to make a meaningful comparison? I'm sure that both would do the job, but would one do it better than the other?

Seems terribly difficult to spot any differences even from Salomon's website.

Trying them on your feet to see which feels best might well make sense. There's often subtle differences in fit etc which might just annoy you somehow on one of them.

Neither has a remotely aggressive sole unit of course, which might be a problem for some things in terms of grip.
