Hi All,

I have a pair of Berghaus Explorer Trek boots, and I find them to be very slippery in all but the driest of conditions. OKAY, I don't suppose any boot will have much grip on wet rocks, but I can't seem to find any grip on any surface. I don't really have anything else to compare them with, other than a couple of different pairs of Merrell walking shoes, and they can be lethal too!! So I don't know if they are good are bad.

Are some tread pattern/compounds better than others?

Cheers,

Steve

I bought a pair of these as casual boots (I prefer boots to shoes; each to their own). I find them very comfortable but, on certain surfaces, such as wet paving slabs, they're frighteningly slippery.

It's the compound which makes the difference on hard surfaces. Some are much better than others, (the tread on boots is for traction on loose surfaces or grass).

And the softer compounds really can grip. Rock shoes an extreme example The pay off is that they don't last as long, especially on harder surfaces.

I've certainly noticed quite big differences between some of my shoes even from the same company. Although I'd say that they actually made sense in context.

If it really is a major problem, and good boots otherwise, you could try asking lancashire sports repair or some such to see if they could resole them with something that would work better.

If they are new it may be the moulding compounds haven't worn off yet. Try sanding/ filing the sole to remove this.
Then it may just be the compound - merell octogrip soles were/are lethal on anything wet

As far as boots go they are pretty cheap, and only cost £60 new, so doubt it's worth getting them re soled. I have worn them for the last 2 years now, and they have never got any better.
