Ive just got a snow peak titanium spork from the snow and rock shop in birmingham. Very nice.

They also do the snow peak, knife fork and spoon set to, along with most of the other snow peak titanium pots, stoves, ect....

Talking of Birmingham, I find that snow and rock is the only shop that is now worth visiting in brum. Unless anyone know any others they would like to recommend.

Would agree, Robert.

There MUST be more shops there...anyone???

I did like the YHA shop, its still a great shop if you like karrimor.

Snow and Rock are Ok but DAMN expensive and won't do discount for forces etc.

is there still a taunton leisure in brum?

they used to be quite good - but thats from about 1996...

popped into slush and rubble two weeks ago (city break, no sprog) and it was full of snowboarding crap.

experience teaches that for a decent gear shop, a long trip up the m6 is required.

Recently (November) i made a pilgrimage to Ambleside on the friday night and we stayed in grasmere YHA (had bad experiences with Ambleside YHA) next morning got up went to Ambleside did some gear shopping then stayed at GRasmere another night and went walking on the sunday and then drove home that evening! It was a great weekend-an expensive one though!

It's hard to find any in the NE and i don't like paying delivery-it's a point of principle!

For some reason I know not why, the Taunton Leisure shop in Birmingham closed suddenly about 2 months ago. This was by far the best gear shop in Bham and now there are only Snow and Rock and Outdoors (the old Scout shop) left that are any good. Of the other chains, Karrimor (was YHA), Blacks, Millets, I think Oswald Baileys is probably the best for small day to day purchases. For boots and major purchases I usually go to Escape 2 in Warwick or Lockwoods in Leamington, both worth the 3/4 hour or so it takes to drive there.

Yes snow and rock are expensive and don't do a discount but I was in birmingham and bought a spork and a new pair of boots (la sportiva trango trek GTX)

I also went up to betws-y-coed and also capel curig las week to get some kit.
Found a nice shop in capel curig called joe browns just behind another shop (im sure you all know it). Very helpful and I also got my 10% discount.

I must say that with all the development, birmingham is starting to become a nice place to shop. I stopped going a couple of years ago, but after a trip over christmas it is now back on my shop list. Alot of th 60/70s underpasses are starting to go, much more shopper friendly. Sorry, my plug for Birmingham has finised.

You've really got to admire the twisted genius that invented the spork haven't you? It's a spoon, it's a fork, bit of time with a whetstone (not too much time obviously) and it's a knife too. Amazing.

Do most of my purchasing over yon interweb thingy in sheer depression, apart from when on pilgrimage to the hills - often a half decent outdoor shop somewhere near the bottom of one.

I've got this mate who insists that its a good idea to sharpen one side of a spoon to save having to take a knife.

I keep trying to tell him that its a bad idea and will end in tears, but he wont have it. Needless to say, I never risk using his spoon.

I mean, surely its just GOT to give you a "chelsea smile" the first time you forget to be careful?

Anyway, sporks. You used to get 'em free from "Spudulike", except they were plastic and not titanium.

Ah, that was the cunning bit of my plan Si - "not too much time" with the whetstone. You want it narrow enough to be able to mash its way through a rasher of bacon but not so razor edged that people can see daylight when they look at you in profile.

I got the idea from a guy I met in a bothy who had sharpened it a bit too much and still said it was a cracking idea when spitting blood out of the door. His spork was too sharp. And that's something you can't say about many people.

I feel rambling of the non red sock variety going on. I'll shut up then.

I can see how that would work.

Thing is, my mate (who we'll call "Chris" for that is his name) was always going on about having it porper sharp, and remembering not to eat from that side of the spoon.

Eh!?!? I can barely remember who I am when I wake up some mornings, never mind remembering that my spoon is now a lethal weapon before shoveling a mouthfull of porridge in my gob!

Bless him.
