Really nicely made and comfortable shoe, but I've been a bit disappointed with the sole unit. IME not brilliantly grippy on damp grass, let alone mud, and even worse after it's had a bit of use. Great for strolling up to crags -- on rocky paths -- and then using for scrambles and easy climbs, but I'd hoped for a bit more.

AFAIK stickier rubber soles are generally less impressive on mid and grass. It's a big trade off. Also wear is worse too. It is designed to excel in rock those shows and it does but other ones are better generalist footwear. Took for the job I reckon...

Thats not the rubber of course Its the pattern they (don't) cut into it to get a bigger surface area in contact. Aren't the crag's basically the non GTX version of these? A few tiny bits of mesh and stuff but pretty similar.

Yes, go for the Crag to avoid insane GTX membranes!

I reviewed this and was positive but now I"m wishing I could go back and change what I wrote, because the wear on the sole is much too fast for an upper that will last for years. They're not that stable, either, IMO, perhaps because of uneven wear. I need a cheaper alternative, or a longer-lasting one.

Well they're meant to be scrambling shoes so 'have' to use soft rubber (and shallow lugs) which won't last forever.

Still the use of tough, leather style uppers and styling in combination with basically non resolable shoes does seem slightly dishonest somehow. Very far from a Haglofs exclusive of course!

Worth checking with someone like Lancashire sports repairs though as they might well be able to put a sensible replacement sole on them.

I'm hesitating between 3 models: would you go for the VERTIGO, CRAG GT or CRAG (with no Goretex) and why?

Thanks
