Hi

I'm on the lookout for a new tent to replace my vango micro 200. It needs to be light for backpacking, under £200, and able to fit one 6'5" bloke (thats me) in. I intend to use it all year round in the uk (mainly in the lakes).

I've been looking at the vaude taurus ul and tn laser light.

any other tall campers got any thoughts on these or other tents i'd be interested to hear there thoughts.

Clifford

I cant comment on the tall thing (cos I am certainly not) but the Taurus UL is a fine 3 season tent.

This is one of the best reviews on it that I could find before I bought one TAURUS ULTRALIGHT REVIEW

Ohh I ought to add that I have had a micro 200 in the past - if you can fit that surely the Taurus should be a doddle?

thanks for that review, very useful. It has always been a very tight fit in the micro but cosy.

Any lanky people have a Hilleberg Akto? I realise this is out of Clifford's price range but to hi-jack his thread for self interest I am curious...

 Thanks

I am 6'4 and fit nicely into my Akto.

Cumbrian Vanary, you might well fit an akto nicely, but the price doesn't fit Clifford's wallet that well...

I'm pretty sure it's Vau De tents that my 6'8" pal has found on the good side, and when you think of the average height of a German compared to a Brit these days I suppose that's not too surprising.  You can also pick up something with a 220 inner for well inside your budget, where a Laser Comp (what replaced the Laserlite) is a bit over it.

Not overly tall, and haven't used one, but have you considered the GoLite Hex 3?  Lightweight, 4 season, and I would imagine you would benefit from the extra headroom.  You would need to confirm the inner length.

I've got the Taurus UL and am 6ft 1in, and have never found the inner length a problem — there's always been a bit of room to spare, even sharing it with a friend of mine who's about 6ft 2in. Excellent tent, apart from the porch which is a wee bit small.

Clifford. I'm 6' 10ins tall, and have bought a TN Laser for solo backpacking instead of a Laser Comp because the Comp seemed a little too small to me. I haven't yet had a chance to use it though, so can't offer any further feedback.

I also have an old TN Solar, which is now a discontinued model but still available from Wild Country (I think it's called WC Solace). That's a nice roomy 1-man tent with good length and headroom but heavier than the Laser and difficult to put up in a strong wind (though it stands up well once up).

I hava an Akto and it is too long for me.  Plenty of room to store my rucksack flat at one end and still have room for me to spare.  I am only 5'10" tall though.  The akto is good because it is very roomy for a one man tent.

You can purchase them here-

Here is what exped say about this tent-

  • Loads of space: extremely wide and long; fits two deluxe sized mats. And even the tallest camper has room to stretch!
  • Sensible layout: Two large vestibules offer storage spaces that are accessed easily, even while laying inside a sleeping bag.
  • Storm proof: Very few stakes are needed for setup. Numerous pre-mounted guy lines are attached, packed in “Cord Stuffsacks“. Security loops on either side of the pole sleeve keeps Vela II taut and secure, even in the roughest weather.
  • Easy handling - day or night: zippers have color coded, reflective, glow-in-the-dark pulls and are easily operated with one hand.
  • Doors are extra wide, with space for 2 adults to sit side by side.
  • Multi-use Canopy: Use the canopy alone with elastic loops on the pole line. Cover with an Exped tarp for a protected, but airy shelter with space to stand.
  • Cross my palm with gold and it could be yours at a reasonable price... I bought it out of curiosity and for comfortable lightweight back packing with my wife and was impressed but tend to camp high up in windy locations so use my akto or spindrift which cope with severe conditions more readily.  It's been used 2-3 times and is mint condition.
