A big thanks to anybody who suggested that I get a Hilleberg Akto as my One man all year-round tent.

Just been camping at ~1000m in the Winter clad Cairngorms on Beinn a'Bhuird & Beinn A'an. It was perfect took a battering on Saturday night and I stayed nice and snug, very quick to pitch. (cannot believe I left it till then to pitch it for the first time but it was so easy!!!)

So cheers for the advice I couldn't be more pleased with my purchase!!!!!!!!!!

Glad you are now a member of the Akto appreciation society! Sounds like you had a great time in the Cairngorms you lucky so-and-so!!

Glad it's not just me that appreciates a great tent.

I've spent over 30 nights in mine and I'm delighted with its performance. It makes a walk that more enjoyable, when you've no worries about spending the night in a tent.

Welcome to Akto-land :-)

great tents, i just hope you don't suffer the dreaded condensation problem when the weather turns very cold !

After my mate's venerable Phoenix Phreak finally gave up the ghost in the recent storm in N Wales, he decided it was time to buy a replacement lightweight tent. So, back to Betws Rock Bottom, where we found an ex-display Akto for £155. I remembered many positive comments from here and on RT, but also the condensation problem. After much humming and harring, and me trying to keep out of it, he plumped for the Akto over a VauDe Hogan (as I pointed out, this was really rather similar to his Quasar, and not an ultralight thing). He seemed very happy with the pitching, and it survived the remainder of the storm without incident. Since he was used to condensation dripping onto the inner with the Phreak, he doesn't seem too bothered by the yet-to-be-encountered condensation problem.

Didn't think to much about the condensation really, it was all frozen and only caused minor internal snowing when my stove was purring away to make my cup of tea in the morning!!

Shall have to see how it progresses, but very pleased thus far!!!!!

pity that like so many tents they are only made for right handed people.
23/11/2004 at 17:57
Hmmm...

I'm a lefty myself, but I don't think I'm that 'handed' that I'd be particularly bothered. My right hand does work; after all, I can use a knife and fork at the same time. And it doesn't work if I swap the knife and fork around; all hell breaks loose.

If the Akto is 'right handed', then the Argos tent is 'left handed'...

I should perhaps explain. I do not like cooking on my tummy so I usually buy tents where I can lean up on my right elbow and find this very comfortable. A very good friend loaned me a Laser this summer and I had to sleep the "wrong way around in it but it was possible. However the Akto is most definitely for those who lean up on their left side.

In early spring I was thinking tents and read this thread. That and the OM reviews decided me. I paid full price because I wanted it right now - and in green. 8 weekends in Scotland later I am so glad I got it. 6 nights in the Cairngorms above 800m, one at 1200m, and I just didn't worry that the weather might turn nasty. It's one of those pieces of kit that simply does what it is supposed to with no fuss - as in boots that fit like slippers and Paramo jackets. Thanks to all who posted on this thread and to those who posted reviews.

Yup, spiffing tent.

Aye, if there'd been tents like this when I were a lad I'd probably never have stopped backpacking.

I looked at the Wild Country Sentinel hooped bivvy for sale for 50quid on the TerraNova clearance sale site and thought, "why even look? my Akto's not that much heavier, and it's able to store me plus gear in comfort".

I know what you mean - I've found myself looking at mine and thinking about sticking it in my day pack; instead of Trail's free gift storm shelter. I'm tempted to go on about how great it is, but it's all been said, and probably better. The only negative thing from my point of view is that it is such a good tent that I keep thinking about outings that are worthy of it, but which I'm not sure that I'm up to!

Funny you should say that, Simon. When I asked my mate if she'd rather be in a bothy bag (the Trail freebie) or Akto. She said Akto. I was going to be carrying the kit, so the extra weight didn't bother her.

Not a difficult decision then :)

And I always do what women tell me to do. I know my place.

Hi, I'm thinking about an Akto. Can you recommend a couple or so suppliers please. Cheers and a Good Christmas to all. REC

I have no particular supplier in mind but I'd recommend keeping your eye out for a sale.

Happy Christmas to you, too!
