To Buff or not to Buff

I'm off to Snowdonia this weekend and really{/b] looking forward to playing in the white stuff. I've been waiting to give my new crampons a blast since November and now the time has arrived. Yippee

The only downside is that I know it's going to be particularly cold and my face tends to get numb when it's cold and then go bright red for days afterwards.

Having been to my local outdoors shop I'm thinking of buying a Buff. Click here for a demo. If find this demo one of the most compelling arguments to make myself look a prat, however, inside the first 30 secs the chap addresses the issue why I want to buy one.

Do any of you have a Buff. If so, what do you reckon to it. If not, have you decided against it for some reason or did you not know about them.

Cheers

I have several (one is one of those half fleece ones - I find this a bit warmer in winter). In very cold weather I find the fact that I can turn my buff into a balaclava style thingy in combination with another hat very advantageous. Keeps your face and neck warm. Of course, you could do this with balaclava too! The advantage of the buff, I guess, is that it can be a scarf one minute, a hat the next and then a kind of balaclava the next. That's why I like them. And they're lightweight but still pretty warm.

Ian, don't do it.
Buff's were made by idol hands, and we all know the devil makes work for idol hands. And therefore Buffs are EVIL.

Do you really want to walking round the hills looking like either a ninja or pirate?

Best thing in the world on my motorbike. Semi fleece great in winter, normal one stops flys acting like bullets on my neck in summer. Not bad for walking when the wind gets up.

Oops. Sorry about the bold. (Where did that damned squiggly bracket come from?)

Cath, you seem to be citing the exact reasons I want one. I'm even more convinced.

Darren, I think I'm turning to the dark side! That's two for and one against. I can see my hill-cred disappearing even now.

I've got two - one with reflective bits which I use for cycling. Great piece of kit which travels with me everywhere. Never tried the fleecy ones though.

Ian,
don't do it. Step towards the light.

Ian,
look what you've started.

Now they will all come out of the woodwork, trying to make you feel as if you will be normal wearing one.

Next you'll be supporting Arsenal...

PS Also save yourself some money and make your own buff. Just use a big enough hankey, make sure it is well used to get that unique buff designer pattern, and just wrap that snot rag round your noggin.

Oh just to put you off even more Chantelle and Paris Hilton have them (both of impeccable bad taste)

Ian, I use Buffs regularly too........in fact someone questioned a phot of me recently on the grounds I wasn't wearing one.

They're great inventions, perfect for every situation......including gagging those who object to them ;-). I particularly like the Buff Visor, which has a neoprene peak.

Buffs are great, Ian: get one immediately!

(Buffs today: Paramo tomorrow.... :-)

Buffs are brilliant. I have several, my missus has a couple and all of my kids have them. We all love them. Brilliant idea and most imprtantly they doo the job.

We've got 4 in our house :o)

A Paramo Buff??

Fantastic piece of kit, couldn't manage without mine, especially the Polar ones.
Coming soon - Windstopper Buffs!

I'm sure the Paramo buffs will be on the way soon. After all, I think they now make gloves, hats, thermals, underwear, acoustic guitars...

That's OK, my misses told a neighbour that I wear a BLUFF when out in the hills !!

I use my Buff just for the reason you're thinking of Ian - I just use the original one not the fleece one and have found it great even in temps well down in the 30's below. If you're put off by the jazzy patterns you can get some fairly plain ones

great bit of kit.. I use one all the time. I sweat a fair bit and wear glasses. I wear the buff as a headband or as beanie style under a hat in colder weather. This stops the sweat running down my face, onto my glasses etc...

For realy cold weather (snow...) i recently bought one of these black neoprene face mask thingies. Looks particularly S & M but is superb.

they are hankies folks,
you've just bought a VERY EXPENSIVE HANKY!!!

Hello!!!!!

At last count we have around £400 worth of buffs.
That's scary.
I carry two at all times, I also use them at work for over my head while crawling a bout under floors, core cutting etc
Best thing ever.
The one I'm wearing in my wee pic is a meteorological buff with weather on it :o)
