Juat wondering if i should treat my new boots, i bought a pair of Hanwag tatra boots, and wondering if now they have a few k's under their belt should i wax em? i usually wax my logging boots early on, and when i get a pair i dont they never last as long, but never having owned a pair of nubuck leather boots before thought i'd best ask. Cheers for any help and advice

ok to answer my own question the advice i have uncovered is that the boots are waxed at the factory but as soon as water stops beading on the uppers then they need re-dubbing, and that the factory waxing can wear off quite quickly so it may not take long for the boots to need re-treating.

Tom, i'm pretty sure you shouldn't use the old style "dubbing" on walking boots, it can eat at the stitching or something, though i stand to be corrected.

A bit of Googling seems to suggest something along the lines of nikwax suede and nubuck is the popular choice.

Grangers Nubuck Conditioner

If you rub on dubbing or polish you will lose the Nubuck effect.

Yeah, Google brought up the cosmetic downside, but losing the effect doesn't affect performance, does it. ?

Or maybe it does, breathability wise.

The only pair of nubuck i've had i lathered in G-wax and didn't notice any difference, though waterproofnes was my priority.

i got me some Boston shoe care leather protector, it says it can be used on nubuck as well as any other leather, to quote the label, it makes it soft and strongly water repellent - also i go for function over form so if they loose some of their visual appeal for being water proof and lasting longer then thats fine with me, though if breath ability is going to be affected then i shall go and purchase something else. (wax not the boots...)

I use dubbing on mine and they perform fine, better then the spray on stuff.

i checked the Hanwag website about their recommendations and also the website of the leather protector I bought, which is listed as being suitable for waxed nubuck leather (which the hanwag tatra are) and going for the none GTX version i reckon im safe to use it though yes it may change the appearance a little, but reckon some clever use of a toothbrush will get the suede finish back

After a good walk your boots will have lost their 'shine' anyway

i thought with the nubuck its about keeping them not shiny
