Hmm tyvek can be pretty waterproof (depending on the type) but it doesn't stop vapour. So using it as agroundcloth to minimize condensation it really doens't work that way.

depends on which side is placed towards the ground,as its main use is as a replacement for roofing felt on houses .

the outer side repels moisture but the inner face lets it through to prevent condensation similar to goretex.

I have got some from BPL partly to act as a footprint and partly to cover the grass in the porch area of my tent. Haven't used it in anger yet. It feels very stiff, although it is supposed to get softer as you use it. The BPL sheet is edged all the way round with black tape and tape loops in the corner. Don't know if you can glue it, but you could definitely sew it, as that's how the tape is attached.

According to http://www.polymernotes.org/resources/tyvekdupont.htm, "Natural product adhesives based on dextrin, casein or animal byproducts can be used to adhere Tyvek® to itself and a variety of paper materials. Water based synthetic lattices such as the ethylene/vinyl acetate adhesives form fibre tearing bonds with Tyvek®. Hot melt polyamide adhesives are available which form good bonds to Tyvek® with a variety of materials. Acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives are commonly used with a release liner."

And there is more detailed information on the Dupont website. Personally, I think taping is probably simpler, as you wouldn't have to wait for the glue to dry/cure.

I've a Tyvek groundsheet/footprint, the only time I've used it, so far, was on soggy ground. Sitting in the porch on just the Tyvek, spread out fully, I didn't find any water came through.

thats great thanks huskyman.........is it true that the writing needs to be face down for it to be waterproof ?

Peter,

I don't know, the sheet of Tyvek I have has no writing on it.

It seems the same on both sides, I got it from TarpTent, to fit my Scarp 1.

It's slightly thicker than greaseproof paper, sort of feels the same, but no matter how much I try I can't rip it.

Rinse it in a washing machine to make it a bit softer.

To glue Tyvek you use PVA, a very common type of glue.An easy way to soften it is just to scrunch it up (roll and twist)Franco
