Considering the purchase of a new (but cheap!) pair of winter walking trousers. Anyone out there ever purchased anything from Extreme in particular their Atlas Pants?

Hello again. Over the years, I've bought three pairs of their Rangers for winter and am pleased with them. We got the last pair a month ago, so they're still in business and turn around orders within a couple of weeks. I would recommend them.

Will the Rangers stand up to the Highlands in winter (Hill Walking not climbing)? I only ask as the Atlas looks to be better suited

High peak leisure in Hanley do their own brand winter trousers which are made in the same factory that the crag hoppers ones are. They're £40 and worth it.

Haven't used the Extreme's but the K2 fabric is the same as ME's Ultrafleece, viz, it's a very wind-resistant, densely woven fleece that works well in cold winter conditions, but may be too warm if you run hot, but in cold, windy Highland conditions should be spot on.

Cheers. Feel a bit of deja vu as I tend to like ME kit (lhotse & windstopper guide in my collection!)

I have a pair of Rangers which i really only use for sitting round dossing in when I'm cold. I find walking in them far too hot and with the integral gaiters of the Atlas Pants I would really overheat. For winter climbing I wear a pair of salopettes with either long johns or powerstretch tights or both, depending on how cold it is, underneath.

We look like "Rangers Family" in the Highlands in winter. They're definitely too hot for the summer, but we've been using them for the last few weeks up in the snow without any baselayer without feeling too cold, although I would normally use a baselayer if it looks like being particularly cold or windy. The Tactel inserts shed snow, so that's always handy. I'm happy enough with them not to bother thinking about replacing them, so that's usually a sign that something is doing a good job.

Eric, Just how water-resistant are they? I would have thought overtrousers over the top would be a tad like a sauna?

I haven't ever had to use over-trousers with them luckily, but yes it would be pretty hot. To be honest, I would probably take them off and just wear the over-trousers on their own or over a baselayer, depending on conditions. If I thought it was going to be an over-trouser day before I started, I would normally wear a baselayer and the over-trousers. A third layer would be overkill.

I have to agree with Jon Doran the ME's Ultrafleece are the dogs kahoonas. I wear mine with a pair of wickable leggins (long johns) and if the weather turns nasty I don my Gortex and feel fine.

Angus

No experience with the Atlas pants specifically, but I've bought a couple of other pairs of trousers from Extreme, made to measure, and I'm very pleased with them.

My order took a few weeks to arrive - but it was a 'special'. Standard stock might be quicker. Otherwise the service was good. Good value.

John
