Hi All. Mrs Sailor says I look a right scruff in my old red Berghaus Goretex waterproof, and when am I going to get a new one? Trouble is, they all seem to be eye-wateringly expensive (i.e. £200 - £300+ !!)

Any suggestions as to where to get something that will do a good job, probably Goretex, eVent or Neo-shell, but that won't require me to take out another mortgage? Under £200 would be very nice..... Thanks.

The Mountain Factor has a number of Patagonia Rain Shadow jackets at half price (£80 from £160). bought one of these a while back and, for the money, must be hard to beat

RAB Event quite often comes in (just) under 200 I think? Montane maybe close in practice, and certainly less if you hit sales.

Various sales places like Cotswold rock bottom (and sundry shops) will have stuff. And then there's 2.5 layer things like the rain shadow - or RABs new volt jacket or all sorts of other bits - which are under 200 to start with.

If - as it sounds! - its not at all urgent then quite possibly best to wait until Spring/Autumn when the previous season's ranges will be on sale.

If weight isn't a remote issue then there's things like this from Cotswold rock bottom: 1 , 2.

Thanks all - some interesting ideas there. I'm an inverted snob about labels, so the Karrimor appeals! Keep 'em coming!

I just got an Outdoors research Helium from Field and Trek:

Very lightweight, Pertex Shield. Seems good, only worn it once....Cheap enough...

I've got a Mountain Equipment Karakoram (GTX performance shell) which is an excellent jacket, for £160. However, I think the new model is pricier and harder to find. I'd recommend checking online deals regularly.

I have the Haglofs Glade linked to by Martin above. Cost me £100 a year or so ago. So far, so good. Not the very lightest, or ultra compact, but not heavy or bulky either.

I bought the new Karrimor Alpiniste out of pure curiosity...a few weeks later its my favourite jacket. £90 online and its EVENT

You'd be hard pressed to look half as ragged, dishevelled and ill-dressed as me. If your Berghaus is still weatherproof and in one piece save yourself two hundred quid and embrace the 'Steptoe Chic' look.

It is currently at £109 from Cotswold (less any discount you're entitled to).  I've been considering this one myself - anyone else found it a good buy? How good is it in really prolonged wet weather?

The karrimor does look good for the money.

It seems a good choice for not too much money.

More on the Haglofs Glade...

...the face fabric is nice and soft and rustle free for those that care about such matters.

The hood is wired, and peaked and adjusts well.

I've worn it in relatively heavy rain for an hour or two at a time without it wetting out.

Breathability is okay, struggled a bit in the warmer weather of Summer though. But it has yet to be an issue.

A way better jacket than my old TNF HyVent or Sprayway Goretex were.

For the money it's a great jacket. Really happy with it.Obviously though you could spend more and get something even better. But isn;t that always the case?

Thanks for that, Andinista

Sports pursuit currently have the Berghaus elite half zip of offer for £50, it uses Berghaus' AQ2 fabric which is pretty good. I used one last year for site work (snapped it up off ebay) and kept me very dry indeed!
