For anybody interested there's an interesting bit on waterproof fabrics in the Articles section on UK Climbing. Starts off pretty simple and progresses logically to more complex issues, making it quite easy to follow. The only bit I had any doubts about was the explanation of Ventile's qualities, but that might be because I'd misunderstood something I read in the past.
Interesting conclusion, too — that most modern fabrics are very close in performance terms to each other.

I'm guessing that co- author Matt Fuller is the OM member 'Mr Fuller' who often contribute s to wpb fabric discussion s.

interesting that they rate the Keela system dual protection stuff for breathabilty - up to paramo level....

It was a good article. I liked the fact that it actually went into some detail, giving proper explanations - unlike the manufacturers who normally just say "holes too small for rain, but big enough for sweat."

Thanks for the comments on the article.

Mole, we didn't really rate the Keela system as equivalent in performance to Paramo, it just made sense at the time of writing for the two systems to be lumped together.

I suppose I should say 'thanks' at this point to all the people on this forum who have contributed to my education in this area over the years: posters such as Captain Paranoia, John Burley, Parky, Martin Carpenter, Peter Clinch and of course Jon Doran (plus others that I've no doubt forgotten) were part of the reason why I got into this line of research! Cheers.

As I said on UKC, it's a nice, clear, concise discussion of the issues around waterproof, breathable clothing.  A very useful article.

Glad to have helped influence your choice of research, and I look forward to hearing more about it.  If you need any help with getting access to surfactant suppliers, I might be able to help, since a mate of mine used to be in technical sales in that field, and may still have contacts that might be useful.
