Hi all,

I've bought a Primus Express Spider and need to know which brand/size cannister to choose for a 2-3 day camp (not at altitude) ?

Cheers

At this time of year - makes no difference what make/brand/mix you have IMHO. I'm not convinced, even, it makes a massive difference in winter (caveat, presuming you use a butane/propane mix of some kind).

what makes a massive difference is what your cooking style is - do you use dehydrated food with a pot cosy (minimal gas use) use boil in the bag and a pot cosy (uses more gas) or cook from scratch (even more. Do you make one brew in the morning then no more till evening? Do you cook lunch?

Then, are you backpacking (weight sensitive), site camping (so can resupply or wild camping (more difficult), car camping so weight isnt an issue or glamping (so the weight of a cylinder really pales into insignificance)

Over to you

The two brands that I have used are Primus Powergas and Coleman gas. Both are a propane-butane mix, although the Primus stuff is apparently a 4 season mix that also contains isobutane (methylpropane, a branched structure so a lower boiling point). I've not noticed a difference in performance, but a friend reported that in cold weather in the lake district the coleman gas was quite slow.

There are three main sizes available normally. The medium size would be more than adequate for a 2-3 camp, assuming "normal" use. I haven't used the smallest canister size, so I can't comment on that, but it would probably do.
