Which GPS please?

Garmin Oregon 450 or Satmap Active 10

Hi Guys,

Looking to upgrade to a GPS with maps, and have these 2 in my sights.

I know the Satmap has really good reviews, but I don't like the shape and size, or the build quality.

I have had a good look at the Garmin and like the size and the touch screen, and the build quality looks good too.

All I want is something simple and intuitive to use that will keep me on track walking around North Wales.

Any comments would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve

You want to buy the garmin. Do so.

I have a satmap because i think it's the best unit, superior facilties, better mapping, better pricing, better interface and better ease of use.

Other than that there's nothing between them.

Of course, there's a lot of free mapping available for the Garmin: TalkyToaster, SMC.  I assmue it's compatible with the Oregon 450, but it would be worth checking before you buy...

Not sure if anyone is doing this for the Satmap.

Not seen any free mapping for the satmap But then got mine from CEX online for just over £100 posted with one year warranty and full GB 1:50 maps on two SD cards.

I bought the satmap because my view was touch screen = broken screen when dropped knowing my luck and the satmap had a good solid plastic cover sitting proud of the LCD this giving it much better resistance to recieving a damaged screen. Also the buttons are much easier to use with gloves on than a touch screen were you either have to take gloves off or use a tiny stylus with gloves which would result in loss of stylus or with cold hands dropping the GPS.

I also have MM on my HTC as backup plus trusty old map and compass.

Some different advice here. I endorse the Garmin choice simply because of the maps you can get for free if you look good enough on the internet... I say nay to touchscreen GPS-es. Simply, too bulky/heavy and use more energy. Go for an Etrex 20 or 30. It's lightweight, uses less battery power and has the same or even better specs except no touch screen.

I prefer the 62s, it's basically designed to be dropped (well not quite) and at the moment, you can get some ridiculously good deals on bundles, for like 340 bish instead of 540!!!
