Which VauDe tent?

Hello all.

Well Summer's a coming, and I'm in the market for a new tent. What bliss.

I have had to sell my beloved Akto as I am now the proud owner of a beautiful whippet and need more space. I can't let him sleep in the porch, as he will be open to the ravages of the Scottish midge or two! I will probably wake up to a bag of bones outside my door and nothing else in the morning. So, a two man tent it is.

I have decided on a VauDe because of its weight and price (I can't afford a Nallo). However, I can't decide between a Lightwing U/L, Taurus U/L or Ferret U/L. All very similar in weight (2kg), space and not that much different in price. What about ease of pitching? Apparently the Hogan pitches inner first, which I don't really fancy. I would appreciate any advice anyone out there could give me in such VauDe matters. Or indeed any other tent I might consider. Though I seem to have set my heart on a VauDe.

Thankyou all, and enjoy the Summer.

No experience yet, but thought I'd reply since no-one else has! I'm getting a VauDe Taurus I tomorrow. It's the same size as the UL I think, and claims to be one of the easiest for one person to pitch. We shall see. I think it all pitches together which will save time, and since I can get it for £99 I can't go wrong really.
If you do decide on a VauDe, shop around! The list price of the Taurus I is £120 and most places charge £5-7 postage, but I have got it discounted, and many sites seem to be doing good discounts for that brand.

I went for the Vaude Taurus II, and used it on South Downs way over Easter. I figured for the extra 200+gms, the extra space was worth it. I'd find it a bit cramped for 2 in the Taurus I, but if I was solo, and had the cash - I'd go for the ultralight. Pitches in one so easily, clever vestibule for cooking in wind. I'm pleased. www.gear-zone.co.uk seem about the best price I could find plus free postage.

The hogan pitches outer first or both together. It uses the shock cord system as on the Mk2, which is brill and really quick - I mean REALLY quick.

However.... if you camp where there might be the odd miscievous scamp it is equally as quick to let down!

If you are talking about the Hogan UL however that is a different tent entirely.

Thankyou for taking pity on me and replying Cara-Lyn. I was beginning to think I wasn't as interesting as I thought I was. That's not a picture of me by the way. Thats John Peel (my hero) playing the piano.
Any road up, I was refering to the ultra light Hogan Mark, whats different?
I have my favourite shop The Kentdale Rambler (Kendal) setting up all three tents for me to look at this weekend. They like me, cos I spend all my wages there.
Happy walking.

We poked in the H ultralite at the OS last year. It's shaped like a shark's fin and just as narrow. Ok for one person - if you pop two in (as they say you can) then neither of you could sit up and you spend the night asleep with your little nose pressed up against the inner.

No thanks.

Its a flysheet over the poles job so i reckon it's like you say - internal tent first

Hi again
Quick word of warning - my Taurus arrived today, and was promptly pitched in the sitting room. Or rather, not so promptly.

Instructions are translated very badly from German, and I'm still not quite sure which bit goes where LOL!!

I remain optimistic, because after all, it only has 3 bits - 2 poles and the fabric, but it would help if they weren't one step lower than IKEA on the rung of helpful instructions!

Bainsy ,
Take the plunge , breath in gently , save a bit more dosh and get the Nallo .
There's loads of decent 2 man or 1 man and his dog tents on the market , but for me the Hillebrg range are the dogs ******* .
As a footnote on Vaude tents I used a Vaude Spider , which must now be discontinued , for years (approx 1998) and it was and still is superb , quality , weight and size wise . It's very similar to the Hogan in design and mine sits waiting for my wife to join me on a backpacking trip . No chance , I'll stay solo , do doubt in by Akto .

Never tried a Hilleberg but they have been reviewed well - but then so has lots of gear I can't stand...

The standard Hogan is a great tent, it's quite light, pretty stable, good amount of space for 2 and the doors are superbly adaptable, the U/L just doesnt offer enough to be of interest to me.

One final thing... why does EVERY Vaude tent review in TRAIL complain about the pegs being painful on their little handies???? Doesn't everyone start a peg by hand then shove it home by standing on it??

It's no good. I'm off to get a loan. My Akto's hurtling off down the road in someone elses hands. Nallo here we come.

Cara, just think anatomy and male/female....
22/04/2004 at 19:57
Now, now we'll have none of that sort of talk (camp bitch not so camp after all?)
22/04/2004 at 20:09
what??

Perfectly normal description for threads etc.

Hmmmmmmmm

Sorry Darren, but since Debbie and I both have new tents, and you are so *obviously* the expert, we have decided to leave our tents in your capable hands and adjourn to the pub!
22/04/2004 at 23:26
Could be a draughty night for the pair of you then...
22/04/2004 at 23:43
Hey up, he's off again!!
PS Darren, I got the Hydra200+ about 3 weeks ago and as the wife was away , I too put it up in the front room [sad b*****d] cos it was raining at the time.
A pole sprung out, scraped across the wall [recently painted] and I had to spend the rest of the day filling the gouge and repainting.
There's a motto in this....................somewhere and I'm sure you'll think of one!!
23/04/2004 at 13:11
Couldn't you have blamed it on an out-of-control drain rod?
23/04/2004 at 16:59
I think I am going to get Darren to put up my Taurus II as well!

The instructions were pants - I agree with Cara-Lyn, but after you have done it once, I thought it was fairly simple to manage again. The very best thing about the Taurus is the pitching is "as one". Saves a LOT of wet kit and a lot more comfier night...
