I have a very dirty lookng pair of Berghaus Yeti gaiters. Has anyone tried putting them in the washing machine with suitable soap? I guess it won't hurt the fabric but would it damage the rubber rand?

I've washed mine a few times, I usually just use a warm wash with no soap.

I agree with Mark, I use Granny's Original Mild & Gentle Fragrance Free Soap Flakes. Best not to use normal every day washing powder as it eats away at the waterproof-ness and makes them less breathable. Some say none BIO is ok but I just use Soap Flake to be safe.

On the Soap Flake front, do any of the big supermarket chains stock them?

Used to be able to buy proper soap flakes in Wilkinsons (top cheapo store!) but now their "so called soap flakes" are actually "30% soap flakes" and have a load of wetting agents in them. Hmm, not ideal then.

I was planning to use the Nikwax loft stuff but I was really concerned what damage might occur to the rubber rand.

Simon you got me thinking I didn’t give it much thought about the Granny's Original Soap Flakes as it say it uses pure soap, but just to make sure I just mailed the manufactures and this is what I got back :P

Description: Soap Noodles to produce transparent flakes

Appearance: Off White / cream pellets

Total Fatty Matter: 78% minimum

Fat Content made up of: 80% Refined Deodorised Palm Oil & 20% Coconut Oil or Palm Kernel OIl

Water content: Less than 20%

Anyone care to enlighten me lol

Clearly there are none of the extra ingredients listed that would cause problems with waterproofing of your gaiters. My O Level Chemistry explained how soap was made from palm oil. Hence the "Palmolive" brand.
